JD Vance introduces bill to make English the official language of the US

Performative bullsh*t.

How many legal immigrants, ones who have a realistic opportunity to attain citizenship, come here without knowing English? I’d bet none.

Is JD planning to start a citizenship path for people without access to the education & job opportunities that currently necessary to get a skilled visa?

This isn’t going to change anything though. Most places (schools, courts, hospitals) are still going to require interpreters. The people struggling to learn the language are usually older immigrants, correct? I don’t see an issue with providing interpreting services for them.

Who is this for? The people walking over the border aren’t going to be permitted to sit for a citizenship test anytime soon. DACA kids are Americanized. Indian immigrants coming here to work at Google know English, as do international students. SMH.

Good for him for trying to solve a non-problem. 🙄

Leadership is absent from the GOP.

This again? Wasn’t that 1995’s version of trans people? Do we get to relive flag burning too?

You can’t get citizenship through your kid

On what planet do you believe that US taxpayers and citizens need to be on the hook for educating illegal alien adults and putting together job fairs for them?
There are hundreds of thousands of legal immigrants waiting in line, doing the work to enter properly without Americans having to foot the bill.

Immigrants who don’t learn to speak, write and read English have very limited chance of upward mobility in the U.S. They mostly end up limited to low paying, hard labor jobs such as lawn, nannying, cleaning, etc. And their children are impacted as well.

No one is saying an immigrant have to only speak English and forego their native language and customs- they can still speak their own language at home, teach it to their children, and such.

But English should be required.

There is no problem. It’s stupid and unnecessary. The intent is to prohibit government forms, information, etc. from being printed or presented in other languages.

This is really dumb and JD Vance needs to go back and learn some history about the language of America. If you went to any major city in the US around 1920, you would have found newspapers published in Polish, German, Italian, et cetera. New Orleans had newspapers published in French for the cajun populace up until recently. Much of the southwest has families that have been American for generations, but who speak Spanish at home. Or, native American. In the Civil War, there were entire regiments of American soldiers who spoke German.

This is performative "Hay speak 'Murkan you dang for'ners" crap to pander to the trailer-dwelling methhead ignoramuses of America.

+1. I’m a child of immigrants (and lifelong Democratic voter), and I see no problem with this bill. Many countries, including Western democracies, require a language test as part of the naturalization process. Immigrants shouldn’t have to sacrifice their own language and culture, but requiring English proficiency is good for everyone.

Which other Western countries are famous melting pots? I wish that immigrants who came here could have English proficiency, more for their own success here than for “efficiency,” but the fact is that lots of those other Western democracies that require language tests also provide language classes. Norway does, for example.

Canada, Australia, the UK. Australia has 1/3rd of its population foreign born.

We have elementary school children being shot to death in their schools, we have homeless people living on the streets, we have so many issues - yet what do Republicans think are the most important things that should be the primary legislative agenda? Non-problems like whether we need English as an official language, criminalizing drag shows, and tracking teenage girls periods.

It's simply astounding.

Lots of countries are melting pots - even take Ukraine as an example, it is the product of Varangians (scandinavian), Slavs, Tatars, Jews, Greeks, Armenians, Romanians, Hungarians and many others.
