What is the point of these frivolous bills?

Simple - to force the other side to come out against it by saying absurd things

Like - it’s racist to have a language!

Or - borders are racist!

Or whatever

I agree it’s a dumb use of political capital

In that case, mission accomplished.

Immigrants who don’t learn to speak, write and read English have very limited chance of upward mobility in the U.S. They mostly end up limited to low paying, hard labor jobs such as lawn, nannying, cleaning, etc. And their children are impacted as well.

No one is saying an immigrant have to only speak English and forego their native language and customs- they can still speak their own language at home, teach it to their children, and such.

But English should be required.

+1. I’m a child of immigrants (and lifelong Democratic voter), and I see no problem with this bill. Many countries, including Western democracies, require a language test as part of the naturalization process. Immigrants shouldn’t have to sacrifice their own language and culture, but requiring English proficiency is good for everyone.

Which other Western countries are famous melting pots? I wish that immigrants who came here could have English proficiency, more for their own success here than for “efficiency,” but the fact is that lots of those other Western democracies that require language tests also provide language classes. Norway does, for example.

Canada, Australia, the UK. Australia has 1/3rd of its population foreign born.

Lots of countries are melting pots - even take Ukraine as an example, it is the product of Varangians (scandinavian), Slavs, Tatars, Jews, Greeks, Armenians, Romanians, Hungarians and many others.

Modern melting pots, hun. Modern.

Not relevant.

Are you aware that the UK and Canada have citizens who originally hailed from all of those countries - and MORE? China, Pakistan, India, Jamaica, etc. Yet their official language is indeed, English. That doesn't minimize the contributions of those who came from elsewhere and settled in the UK/Canada. English is their official language (as well as French in Canada) and should be ours, as well.

A huge number of people who came through Ellis Island couldn't speak English. So what's the point here?

Yes, and Ukranian is their official language.

We aren't Canada, we aren't the UK. Ridiculous to push legislation on a non-issue like language.

I completely disagree. It may be a "non-issue" to you, but it isn't to me. Good for him and I hope the bill passes.

They also had official regional languages (non-Ukrainian) based on the makeup of each oblast but that went away with Russia's invasion of Crimea and Donbas in 2014. But this is also not relevant or making the case for why the US would need English as a national language.

I completely disagree with you. The legislature's time would be better spent on *ACTUAL* issues like gun violence, methamphetamine abuse, homelessness, spiraling healthcare costs, mental health, or any number of other things which are VASTLY more important and VASTLY more urgent than a national language. And you are a complete fool for thinking national language deserves such priority and urgency.

Keep moving those goalposts! First you asked "which other Western countries are famous melting pots?". You were provided answers, by several different people. You didn't like those answers, so now you deem them "not relevant." Keep it up - it's clear we're dealing with a non-serious person.

The UK does not have an official de jure language.

Oh sorry, you probably don’t speak Latin.

Wow, you are really threatened by this, aren't you! In what way has this been promoted with such "priority and urgency"? It's just another bill, along with all of the ones that address the other issues you mention. But this one has certainly got you clutching those pearls... very telling.

So you’re cool with the proposal to make English the official language. I glad we agree.

Looks like you need an English class Miss "I glad"

You're confusing different posters. And nothing I've seen anywhere in this thread makes any kind of relevant point as to why the US should have one official language of English.

Funny! Here's a Latin term you may want to look up: de facto. English is the de facto language of the UK.
