So Va Tech is harder to get into than William & Mary? I just read the William & Mary ED thread and almost all the accepted stats are around 4.1 or 4.2 weighted with lower SAT. Some 4.0 weighted.

For Virginians, VT and W&M are practically peer schools right below UVA.
Some Engineering majors at VT are considered peer to UVA.

Also, many kids just don’t like the vibe at W&M and don’t even apply. For certain students W&M is amazing. None of my DC’s friends applied to W&M. Most applied to UVA and VT.

What's the vibe that they don't like?

This has been mentioned her many times, and hotly contested by W&M fans. The vibe to my kids was somewhat nerdy, try hards, serious students but quirky and friendly. When we visited everyone looked very stressed and hardly any smiles.

My DS liked it but not as much as UVA so it was second choice. my DD hated it.

+2 This is what my 3 kids said too. Plus, the social life is boring. Their words, not mine.

DS chose W&M because he is nerdy, quirky, works hard (if that's what you mean by a try hard), serious student who prefers a laid back (no drinking and hard parties) social life. We visited a few times. DS also shadowed in the classroom and spent a few hours with a student ambassador.

And that’s great. My DS was so close between UVA and W&M but went with Uva. Would’ve been happy ant either school. There is nothing wrong with “the vibe” just that is suits some kids and not others.

What's the vibe that they don't like? Honest question from mom of potential applicant...

DS didn’t apply. The reputation is that the students don’t really party and have social fun. The school environment is very liberal and predominantly female. It’s liberal arts based and not as strong for hard sciences.

From my experience, a colleague’s son went a hated it there. I know two other women who went there and neither went to many parties with drinking. I

My DS is probably going to ED there and he’s hoping it’s true It’s not a party school! So, for some kids that’s positive about the vibe. I don’t think it’s true that it’s bad in sciences. I think the sciences are strong just that it’s not an engineering and CS school. I think bio, chem and physics are supposed to be good.

Yes, sciences are very strong with lots of professor contact and research opportunities since it’s a small school. I think lots of people confuse Engineering with science.

I agree that there's nothing wrong with the vibe..and the vibe does exist. Stereotypes exist too, and those didn't just come out of nowhere.

DC was a competing for a full scholarship and would have agreed to go to UVA where he knew he can find his people as well, although it might just take a bit more work.

I really liked the vibe at VT, but DC did not.

But W&M is #9 for happiest students and #5 for students love their college based on Princeton Review student and alumni surveys.

Just saying I could count the number of smiles we saw on two hands lol this was in November maybe that’s why. The tour was great. Loved the tour guide. I really liked the school but yeah they didn’t look like they were having fun. And maybe that IS fun for these kids. It was a beautiful sunny day and people were out reading books but no one playing sports or throwing a frisbee.

It doesn't have stats (GPA, SAT, ACT), though.

OK, but Princeton Review does ask actual students and alumni.

While some students fit the studious, quirky stereotype, my DD at W&M has found plenty of social life. It’s work hard during the week, and blow off steam on the weekends. Parties, Greek life, clubs—all of it. But the work is no joke.

No, that's not why some don't like it. There are plenty of liberal arts colleges that don't evince the kind of strong reaction W&M does among many. My DC applied to several SLACs but immediately wanted to leave when we visited W&M and sat in on an admissions presentation.

I'm not sure what's wrong with this website, but these aren't accurate.

Could you please use the W&M thread to talk about it? This thread is about VT. Thanks.
