| UMich daughter said it was 19 degrees and windy this morning on her hike to the library. Amazing school but if you are at all sensitive to cold weather, avoid it. It’s not like Boulder where there’s always lots of sun. |
It’s not like Boulder academically either….. |
| What major? Makes a difference |
| Why would anyone want to compare these schools? Berkeley, UCSD or UCSB are better for purposes of comparing with Michigan. I did not put UCLA in the mix. Coat of living is sky high in LA. UCLA or USC only make sense as an OOS student if you get merit money or have family money. The kind of parents where you don’t blink an eye when your kid asks for $2000 for a night out. Even among students, there is a lot of plastic surgery, flashy cars/clothes and ubiquitous consumption. |
| USC fight on! |
For the majority of kids at Michigan, it makes no difference if they are at Michigan or Boulder Michigan is a huge school - the top 1/3 it’s worth it. The bottom 2/3 could end up with the same opportunities while going to a better lifestyle school |
LOL!! My DC is a Junior at UCLA. Yes, we can afford it and think it's worth it - but no, DC does not get $2K for a night out and neither do any of their friends. DC works part-time during the school year for their spending money, had an internship last summer that paid close to $20K, and spends their own money for leisure. We are a pretty affluent family and DC does not have to work - but does anyway. Sure, there are super wealthy kids at UCLA, but they also have one of the highest numbers (and percentages) of first gen, low-income students of any school in the country. |
Good clue is the graduation rate - at Michigan the 6 year rate is 94%, at CU is 72%. |
that's where you want to be if you want to network... lots of potential investors |
|
Unless the kid has a strong slant towards finance, and is in state for Michigan, then UM has the edge.
Otherwise in most instances, USC is the better option. |
Totally disagree. Michigan is stronger academically than USC in most comparable disciplines. |
That’s nonsense. Michigan offers a superlative education that Boulder could only dream of providing. |
Undergraduate College isn’t about education - it’s mostly signaling CU Boulder is a flagship - kids below the median at Michigan aren’t gonna anything different out of life than kids from CU….the Michigan brand only moves the needle for the top 1/3 at Michigan. For others they are competing and on a level playing field for jobs and opportunities from other flagship public grads. UM (or any public flagship) isn’t penn where even the 25th percentile grad can see a difference in outcomes just based on the strength of the brand |
Completely disagree. Michigan is overcrowded college for instaters. USC is a better school overall. |

Remember when sportscaster Jim Rome used to call USC SCCC?
USC isn't in Michigan's league as an overall university. If you are interested in the entertainment industry, USC and NYU are as good as it gets but otherwise Michigan is probably better. They've also closed the side door at USC. |
