Why would anyone want to compare these schools? Berkeley, UCSD or UCSB are better for purposes of comparing with Michigan. I did not put UCLA in the mix. Coat of living is sky high in LA. UCLA or USC only make sense as an OOS student if you get merit money or have family money. The kind of parents where you don’t blink an eye when your kid asks for $2000 for a night out. Even among students, there is a lot of plastic surgery, flashy cars/clothes and ubiquitous consumption.
LOL!! My DC is a Junior at UCLA. Yes, we can afford it and think it's worth it - but no, DC does not get $2K for a night out and neither do any of their friends. DC works part-time during the school year for their spending money, had an internship last summer that paid close to $20K, and spends their own money for leisure. We are a pretty affluent family and DC does not have to work - but does anyway. Sure, there are super wealthy kids at UCLA, but they also have one of the highest numbers (and percentages) of first gen, low-income students of any school in the country.
