University of Michigan v University of Southern California

If you go to USC, you’re never returning. If you go to Michigan, you’re coming home. If you’re a parent think about that.

Is this even a question?

USC

Well, if its good enough for president's daughter, its good enough for majority.

Imho she probably wanted USC to begin with but timings weren't socially acceptable to go there amid celebrity admission scandals, picking a state school reflected well on her parents.

This.

She’s not an academic. She’s even more of an influencer type/aesthetic than her older sister; she was dying to be around young black fly money in LA

Now she can date nba, mlb, nfl ballplayers, actors etc

Lol if this is part of your decision making, take both off the table and just have them commute to local state u. You can do their laundry for the remainder of time.

Yep. It's always cute to see obvious overconfident public school lifers pretend they comprehend what a private school is like, but they just KNOW they're overrated and a waste of money!

University of Spoiled Children is not a great school. It’s above average students with money. Michigan academics are superior. USC is a school for lifestyle, like Colorado Boulder. Michigan is for academics. Choice depends on why one is going to college.

Not to mention one step outside of USC is a ghetto.

When's the last time you visited USC? Ever? Campus and the neighborhood around it has changed dramatically in the last 20 years. Ann Arbor is a boring dump compared to Los Angeles.

Moneyed kids at Michigan party for a year or two in frats and sororities and then they're pretty over it and eager to move on. It's a provincial small town in the middle of nowhere. USC offers the same things but when you're an upperclassman you can do more grown-up things, get an internship in the city, go to nice restaurants, the beach, and everything else a world class city offers.

Funny we may see this match up in the college play offs.

There are some obvious tangible reasons to pick one over the other.

If your kid wants to work in entertainment, or generally in Southern CA, then USC is hands down a better option. The USC alumni network is very strong and entertainment is certainly an industry where you want to be physically close to the epicenter and USC is very strong in the industry.

If your dream is to work in automotive or generally in the Midwest, then Michigan is hands down the better option.

After that, going to school in a large city vs. a small town...weather...strength of specific programs come into play.

Seems like a generally odd choice to me that someone is possibly deciding between Michigan and USC.

One of DS's friends applied to both in 2020. He wants to get into sports journalism (family has money so immediate income after graduation not an issue).

Applied RD to kinesiology school for sports management and waitlisted (the school is hard to enter as a freshman, as most slots are filled with incoming athletes; once they transfer/drop out, the school actively recruits for transfers from other UM schools). UM has no sports journalism school but has lots of sports content, hence many alumni in this field (Schefter, Eisen, etc.).

Applied RD to USC and was admitted to Annenberg as a Winter 2022 starter. He's happy there.

So yes, it's a combination of major, lifestyle, post-graduation expectations, etc.

Michigan does have a nice automotive research center, but it's the tip of the iceberg as far as the academics it offers. Also, a significant percentage of grads leave the state after grad.

I probably know hundreds of UM students and alumni (I am not one of them)

I know exactly zero who work in the automotive industry.

I am not sure where this even comes from other than USC=film and Michigan = cars.

Just a fairly reasonable assertion that physical location matters to the career you want to pursue. I picked automotive because that is the obvious Detroit/MI industry. Pick whatever industries that more align with your thinking and are based in the Midwest. Strange that you would know hundreds of UM students and alumni, yet you yourself did not attend.

As an example...where does SpaceX hire the most college grads? USC. Why...because they are there. After USC it is CMU...so if you really want to work at SpaceX or LA-based industry X, and don't think you will get into a CMU, then USC is a great choice. Likely better than Michigan.

Community college is even closer and cheaper.
