No, we'll do nothing because that' the US's MO. We've had American citizens held hostage by other countries while we welcome their citizens, so nothing new here. Ideally, we'd be trading her for any Russians still in the US and banning any more from entering

It feels like the US is never willing to take a strong stance in these situations. Create a situation where Russia has to trade for citizens held on trumped up charges. There are so many archaic laws on the books in the US that you could find something to charge anyone with.

When you are traveling outside of the US and you break the laws of another country, it is standard for the US to not get involved. The only reason this case has received so much attention is because she's an athlete. If she was the average person no one would hear anything and the person would be allowed to just sit there in their own mess.

You are not correct. In most cases the U.S. government will not provide legal advice and instead just furnish a list of lawyers, make a few calls on behalf of the American citizen, etc.

However, they will liaise with the foreign governments, particularly in cases that appear to be politically-motivated or capricious. The Griner case fits this latter criteria to a tee.

I also do not believe anything on the Russian side of this case - they are liars and thieves. They picked her to purposely stoke the U.S. culture wars, knowing that lots of white conservatives would feel little sympathy for a black gay female basketball players. You can read that sentiment for yourself in this thread.

The USG tells these families not to speak publicly. This is standard operating procedure in politically-motivated foreign court cases and kidnappings.

Just hold all of their Tennis players coming over for the open on immigration charges. If you want to match Russia, send them to a military brig offshore and out of the reach of US courts and get all of the Americans held by Russia back
