I think it is her blackness + being gay that triggers your lack of empathy. Brittney being black and gay is the least remarkable thing about her. She is one of the top athletes in the US. People are going to have opinions on this. |
+1 It feels like the US is never willing to take a strong stance in these situations. Create a situation where Russia has to trade for citizens held on trumped up charges. There are so many archaic laws on the books in the US that you could find something to charge anyone with. |
10:14 that is why DH feels the way he does |
|
| Why should the government treat her differently than any other US citizen? She deserves whatever support you or I would get but nothing more. She plays a game for a living and attempted to smuggle drugs out of Russia. Clearly not very bright. |
| She is guilty but she is also being exploited over geopolitical issues. For that reason, Biden is right to get involved. |
|
When you are traveling outside of the US and you break the laws of another country, it is standard for the US to not get involved. The only reason this case has received so much attention is because she's an athlete. If she was the average person no one would hear anything and the person would be allowed to just sit there in their own mess.

You're 100% ignorant or lying. Whenever a U.S. citizen is detained overseas, the U.S. embassy or closest consulate in that country will assist the American citizens in legal defense matters and negotiations with the foreign government. |
Wrong. Totally wrong. Assist in legal defense? Nope. They will provide some info on local attorneys you can hire. They will also make sure you are being treated properly as per international agreements - getting food, water, not beaten, etc. You really think State is paying legal fees and entering into negotiations over every jackass American who gets locked up overseas? |
You are not correct. In most cases the U.S. government will not provide legal advice and instead just furnish a list of lawyers, make a few calls on behalf of the American citizen, etc. However, they will liaise with the foreign governments, particularly in cases that appear to be politically-motivated or capricious. The Griner case fits this latter criteria to a tee. I also do not believe anything on the Russian side of this case - they are liars and thieves. They picked her to purposely stoke the U.S. culture wars, knowing that lots of white conservatives would feel little sympathy for a black gay female basketball players. You can read that sentiment for yourself in this thread. |

There is no reason to believe she did anything wrong.
I assume the Russians are lying and bringing false charges. |
Has anyone - her wife, or anyone else - said that she did not have the contraband? |
The USG tells these families not to speak publicly. This is standard operating procedure in politically-motivated foreign court cases and kidnappings. |
Just hold all of their Tennis players coming over for the open on immigration charges. If you want to match Russia, send them to a military brig offshore and out of the reach of US courts and get all of the Americans held by Russia back |
And, he is still a Trump pig. Are you proud to be married to a racist? |
