She should not get any better treatment that other US prisoners in Russia get.
She pled guilty. So, as to OP's question - yes, I think she is guilty. She probably thought with her fame, nothing would happen to her if she got caught. Very definition of entitlement. Meanwhile, we have Paul Whelan who has been detained in Russia for 3 years, falsely accused of espionage. Of course, he isn't a celebrity. His sister expressed outrage at the attention Griner is getting.... and ultimately, that prompted Biden to call the Whelan family. https://godanriver.com/news/national/govt-and-politics/biden-speaks-to-sister-of-us-executive-detained-in-russia/article_c06f69f7-2b81-5cda-a50d-1baabc2645c5.html Moral of the story: Don't travel to countries like Russia or China or other countries run by dictators who have no regard for human rights or human life. You can do nothing wrong and still end up in their prison as a bargaining chip. |
| She is definitely guilty, have to follow the law of the country you are in. Now she only had .7 grams of cannabis oil which is almost nothing. 10 years is a max sentence, if they give her that then it is wrong and purely as a negotiation move. If she gets a year or less then that likely makes sense, she’s already served like 4 months. |
Truth. |
The typical charge in Russia with this amount is only a fine. Now she is a foreigner and was transporting it on a plane, both of which up the seriousness of the charge. Time served seems like plenty based on their laws. Something under a year is still a lot but not totally out of bounds. |

The Russians are saying they’ll trade her for Victor Bout.
That’s bananas. |
It’s gonna happen. Clyburn gave the word. |
| Can’t imagine believing the Russians that she even did what she is accused of. |
|
Doesn’t matter.
If not that, they would have found something else or planted it. Russia wants to trade some of their spies back. |
NP but if that happens that is a terrible decision both politically for the democrats and morally. Victor Bout needs to serve his entire sentence for the atrocities he committed all over Africa. |
| She should be extradited home. No question. |
If she were a Russian citizen anything under 6 grams would be considered an administrative offense. She'd have to pay a fine but no jail time. Russia is 100% using her as a political pawn. The fact that she is getting harsher treatment than anyone else would have is unjust. To match Russia's "fairness" toward US citizens, maybe the US should do the same thing - start rounding up and incarcerating any Putin-connected Russian citizens in the US for administrative-offense level things like unpaid parking tickets and offer to send them to Russia as prisoner exchange. That would be comparably fair to what Russia is doing. |
10 years is typical drug sentence even in the us |
| I would rather bite and focus his energy on helping innocent people get out of jail here in the United States. |
| Considering the US has the highest incarceration rate in the world, by a significant amount, I guess it's not surprising that letting someone who can't get a fair trial rot in a Russian prison for a minor violation isn't a big deal. Kudos for your moral consistency. |
I’m all for this plan. I just don’t think we should exchange Victor Bout who is a mass murderer, for Britney Griner. Round up some oligarchs, trump up the charges and exchange them for Britney. |
