I haven’t watched FOX but they must be taking Putin’s side

Why bring Fox into a conversation about whether this person is guilty or not?
She pled guilty. WTH does Fox have to do with this?

Ever heard of taking the plea if you feel you won't get a fair trial? If not you must not be from the US or Russia.

So, WTH does Fox have to do with this?

And, on another note, I have heard nobody who speaks for Griner say she DIDN'T have contraband. Not her wife, not even Griner.

What FOX has to do with it is that they've taken Russia's side on things so much lately that one wonders if they get kickbacks from Putin's communications director.

LOL. It is clearly evident that you do not watch Fox and have no idea what and how they report.
You people crack me up with your obsession with Fox.

She earned big big money in Russia playing for a Russian team--over a million dollars per year. She'd been playing for the team for years.

So she kneels for her country’s national anthem but throws all of her “principles” out of the window for a couple of dollars to play a game in Russia. Sounds like a high character individual.

DH hopes they blast the national anthem in her cell 24/7 until she is released.

Your DH wants the Russians to torture an American? Tell me you're a brainwashed animal without telling me you're a brainwashed animal...

WTF is wrong with your sadistic husband? You still respect this man?

She claimed she packed quickly.

She's a great player, but not the sharpest blade in the drawer.

She's a scapegoat and a pawn, poor woman. She doesn't deserve this.

She should get fined and deported. Not jailed. That's absurd and EVIL. Like the Russians. Visit a Ukrainian graveyard if you don't believe me.

people in the USA are conditioned that there are no real penalties to breaking laws, so they assume the rest of the world is the same way. It's not

But yeah, you can't go to another country and not follow their rules and then when you don't be shocked about consequences.
I'm sorry I don't think she deserves 10 years but that's up to Russia, not us

10 years is typical drug sentence even in the us

No 10 years is not the typical drug sentence in the US.

It was if you were black and using crack cocaine a few years ago. If you were using powdered cockiness you had to use 100 times the amount to get the sand sentence.

Now she only had .7 grams of cannabis oil which is almost nothing. 10 years is a max sentence, if they give her that then it is wrong and purely as a negotiation move. If she gets a year or less then that likely makes sense, she’s already served like 4 months.

If she were a Russian citizen anything under 6 grams would be considered an administrative offense. She'd have to pay a fine but no jail time. Russia is 100% using her as a political pawn. The fact that she is getting harsher treatment than anyone else would have is unjust. To match Russia's "fairness" toward US citizens, maybe the US should do the same thing - start rounding up and incarcerating any Putin-connected Russian citizens in the US for administrative-offense level things like unpaid parking tickets and offer to send them to Russia as prisoner exchange. That would be comparably fair to what Russia is doing.

I’m all for this plan. I just don’t think we should exchange Victor Bout who is a mass murderer, for Britney Griner. Round up some oligarchs, trump up the charges and exchange them for Britney.

Round up random Russian nationals on charges and offer them up for prisoner exchange for Griner.

I think we could get a lot more in exchange for their oligarchs than a basketball player.

Nah, we just need to round up a few of the oligarch's adult children at NYU, HBS, Wharton, Stanford, etc. Pretty easy pickin's, should be easy to get them on a trumped up charge.

No, we'll do nothing because that' the US's MO. We've had American citizens held hostage by other countries while we welcome their citizens, so nothing new here. Ideally, we'd be trading her for any Russians still in the US and banning any more from entering

There are a number of US citizens that are wrongfully (trumped charges, overkill in conviction and sentencing, serving time in a max security prison) imprisoned in countries with dictator or military rule. She has served all the time she should on what she had in her possession and for her stupidity. The two hour drives to court and back to the prison in a cage with her legs cramped up will be a lifelong reminder of her missteps.

Remember the young missionary who took a clock or picture from the room while in N Korea? Where is he now? He didn't deserve what he got, and when finally released in the same state as a shaken baby, the US didn't dictate whether others N.Korea may have had imprisoned should be released first.

Same in Russia. Griner is already aware from the letter her lawyer helped write that she is not the only US citizen being held and all should be released. But already Trevor Reed, who has described how horrible his internment was for being drunk on the street and picked up by a local police district to dry out, was released in exchange for someone we are holding for legitimate espionage convictions, before Paul Whelan has been released (for what?). I don't understand why Russia is holding out on Whelan, and letting him physically and emotionally rot until he's broken in prison. We won't dictate the terms of who or when Russia will release either American, but Putin is cognizant the continuing to hold Whelan is irritating to the US in general.

These stories from CBS and the Trevor interview on CNN were pretty good to watch or read.

Ewww! You must be married to a real pig. Guessing you agree with him + love Trump- right?!

So many gross posters on this thread. So many are ok with locking up an American...as long as she is black + gay. And, do not tell me about the law...I am a lawyer.

If only there was something she could have done to prevent it, like not bringing drugs into another country….

You are really saying this about the country that has the highest incarceration rate in the world? Sigh.

I think it’s her hatred of her country that resonates most with her detractors.

Im irritated that she went to play for Russia, given everything they have done. And of course, they immediately seized the opportunity to throw her in jail. Despite what she thinks of the US, we have her back, and she wouldnt be in this situation if that feeling were mutual.

I think it is her blackness + being gay that triggers your lack of empathy.
