That could be true. Chlumsky’s hair was terrible. I kept noticing how bad the cut and colour were and how it did nothing for her features and colouring: it just kind of hung there, matte and bushy and dry-looking, like something a not-very-savvy woman would do to herself at home after a box dye and Supercuts. But…that would fit the character perfectly. So maybe it is intentional for Chlumsky to look so bad. |
She way overacts. Her pregnancy is ridiculous but interesting in that she is very ambivalent about having a kid at all. Her husband seems like a stuffed animal. And I agree too old for this part. Anna (the actress) is a beautiful girl but her lips are her worst feature. She does do a great job with the upper crust matron thing of expressing emotion by mouth expression while saying nothing. Copied from the devil wears Prada and real life. |
What is with the insistence on having aged actors play too-young parts in this series? In addition to Chlumsky, the woman who plays Rachel is 39. There is a scene where “Rachel” says something to another character like, “What, you’re not used to hanging out with 20-somethings?”, which just emphasised the fact we were all supposed to be fooled into thinking that the mumsy looking-ever-day-of-40 actor playing Rachel was also in her 20s. It was jarring and didn’t work. I think this is why the Rachel actor overcompensated with the eye-widening and little-girl gestures, and probably why Anna Chlumsky did it too. Why not just have actors playing characters who are in the ballpark of their actual ages? |
I think it might be getting by in NYC as a reporter. The salaries are for rich people; ie not to live on. Getting ready to box dye my hair and head over to super cuts myself. |
In one of the episodes she said she doesn't like that she's even thinking about clothes so I take it that she's not into fashion and just barely does the min. |
Yes, and there are other things that are emphasized. Remember how Anna was very focused on Vivian making a "media visit" to Rikers because that was VIP treatment there. And Vivian just blew it off, to the point where Anna snaps at her, "Do the work!" I have only watched the first half, but it is still hard to believe that this is more or less a true story. |
| I’m enjoying the series. I think that many of the characters acted in what they wanted to believe rather than any facts or truth. The lawyer in particular: he didn’t check the bona fides of the foreign bank over 60 MILLION DOLLARS ? That’s someone who wants to believe something. And to some extent the Rachel character. Who gives their card to a hotel in a foreign country and doesn’t expect they will use it to pay the bill? Even someone asking you to do that for any reason would raise a flag. Still fascinating that people will believe what they want to believe. |

I'm watching it and just finished the Tinder Swindler. I am just shocked by these people. My partner is a forensic accountant and is very familiar with these types of white collar crimes.
I think that they purposefully made Anna Chlumsky look bad. She is actually a very naturally pretty woman. She's supposed to be very preganant and working long hours. I don't know about you, but my kids were two weeks late and I looked horrible at work. I dress fashionably but was very much a beached whale taking the metro and walking to hearings and meetings. I have encountered several people like Anna in DC. In my 20s, I had a friend who lived with an older family friend rent free in Georgetown. I had another friend who lived with his friends grandparents in Kalorama. There are other moms that lived the socialite lifestyle only to be indicted in federal court. Or people that seem to live way beyond their means at my kids' schools. My husband and I see past this. But most people do not. |
| Based upon what I’m reading here, I’ll skip this one. |
The actor was also Anne Hathaway's screen husband in the movie Intern. It was literally the same role, the same husband. I am not sure he can play alone else. |
| I’m liking it |
| There is a lot to be desired in the series but I think Garner is an amazing actress. You want to watch her, but maybe you hate her, but also you feel for her, and she says so much with just her face in every scene. |
Exact same role. Except here I was like “Does he have a job? What’s his deal?” |
He did not have a job the last time too. He was a cheating SAHD. Maybe he cheated with Viv and is now her husband. |
| So in real life did Anna have some kind of money? She had to have some money so was her family really wiring her money? I think that was part of the scam but some of the cash had to come from somewhere. |
