Like Julia has embodied Ruth Langmore so well she can't switch it off. The real Anna sounds nothing like that of you watch news interviews. It wouldn't be so weird if Julia didn't do the press junket had talked about how hard she worked on nailing the accent. It's like she protests too much |
Actually, she has been paid so much money for this that there's overflow and she's getting the money herself. Shameful. |
| I agree the accent is just weird and the real Anna is awful, but I'm finding the series fascinating. |
+1 |
That's not what hypocritical means. Criminals should not profit from their crimes. Unless you actually think they should, which is what you said. |
| thanks for this thread, ya'll. I wanted to see this because I remember reading about the story as it unfolded and it was JUICY. But this sounds like a pretty disappointing adaptation. |

I read My Friend Anna and I was happy to see that the writers/producers viewed Rachel Williams the way I did when I read her tell-all about being defrauded by Anna. Rachel basically hung out with Anna for months and was happy for Anna to pay for beauty treatments, expensive meals, and travel, and then Rachel was stupid enough not to understand that volunteering her card (her corporate card!) to the hotel in Morocco was going to end with charges to the card.
While Anna was a scammer, Rachel was a shallow opportunist. The part I didn’t understand about this in the movie was why they got a 40-something actress with wrinkles, a saggy double chin, and rubbery lip fillers to play 20-something Rachel. It was very distracting to see the Rachel-actress’s mannerisms (confused, innocent eye widening and furrowed brows, over and over, in every scene, and her girlish voice and outbursts) when I know the real Rachel had been mid-twenties. Even though they dressed up the Rachel-actress in girlish dresses and long hair, it looked so off having her pretend to be the same age as Anna. If they were set on using the 40-something actress, why not change the character’s age to reflect this? I’m waiting to see the real Rachel’s response to seeing herself portrayed so badly in the series. |
She was taken for $60k by Delvey. |
+1 My Friend Anna by Rachel Williams was a fascinating read, but not for the reasons Rachel intended. She portrayed herself so badly in the book. In a way, I have a lot of respect for Anna. I think she intended to pay the money back, and would have done so if she’d gotten the loans. I also think that her original idea for the art foundation was great, and clearly so did a number of potential investors. If the loan had only gone through in time, I do believe Anna would have been successful and we would be reading about how brilliant she had been to take such risks and have the confidence in herself to know the loans would come through. Rachel is just an idiot. |
Yet she was also happy to accept thousands of dollars worth of meals and beauty treatments from Anna up until the point Rachel VOLUNTEERED her card. You shouldn’t volunteer to give something you can’t afford to lose, really. Anna gambled big with money she didn’t have in an effort to achieve something big, while Rachel comes off as a vapid girl whose interests are gossip, socialising, and fashion only (in Rachel’s book and the series). Rachel’s interviews that she did 1+ years ago, which I watched on YouTube after reading her book, made her seem like an airhead. I have more respect for Anna. |
Yeah, the accent is terrible. Some of her facial expressions are very Ruthish and I keep expecting her to start yelling and cussing, |
Someone on the deuxmoi question box about this girl said they knew her and thought the accent in the show was spot on, called her weird accent a "german drawl." I bet it's completely made up, like when Lindsey Lohan suddenly started talking very strange as if we didn't all watch her grow up from the age of 10. |
I'm not saying she wasn't a victim of a crime, I'm saying don't complain about a tv show when you wrote a book, and then sold the rights to a book to a, wait for it, a TV SHOW. |
This is exactly how I viewed Rachel too! I haven't checked out the documentary yet though. |
The jury in the trial hated Rachel and didn’t even convict Anna of that part of it. She came of terribly during the trial. |
