Thank you for posting this PP. Similar score for our junior and she is not happy this morning (also not a great test taker). I imagine that her mood will not improve once she starts comparing scores with friends who are naturally good at tests. |
| To all the parents of younger kiddos, scores will go up by virtue of getting older so don’t stress too much, fwiw. And DCUM is filled with parents of kids who took the actual SAT before junior year (or very early) as a junior but my kid’s school advises waiting until later junior year bc they often get a bump bc of the curriculum they learn junior year. Just another perspective. |
Son is now a senior. In 10th grade, he got an 1170 PSAT. He has taken two SATs since then. His high for a single sitting is 1460, his superscore is 1490. He did have a tutor for the SAT. The 1170 is just a milestone in the high school journey. |

Thanks, this was a 10th grader. Hopefully things will get higher as he gets more used to the formats! I think the anxiety was the issue. He gets extra time but I’m not sure they need it, it might actually hurt them because he gets bored waiting. |
Thank you, I should have mentioned our child is a Junior as well and no has never tested well but we did do some prep at home so I was hoping for something a bit higher. We will try more intensive prep but I am not even sure it will help. |
pp here-- I had a lot of test anxiety and was not "fast" or strategic in how I took these tests. My ACT score was low because I took it cold. When I went to grad school, I did some independent prep and saw my sample scores go up astronomically as a result. I did really well and got into (and graduated from) the program that I was aiming for. A 3.8 unweighted GPA is fantastic-- I don't think my DS's grade will be that high, even with a lot of work. |
West coaster here so scores have not come out yet. I’m dreading them. DS is dyslexic and has ADHD. He said the PSAT was the first time he has ever used all of the extended time and he still did not finish. I already warned him not to compare scores, but I know what kids are like. His friends are neurosurgical and great students so I know how this story ends and it makes me sad. He is likely to take the ACT instead of the SAT anyway so the scores are meaningless. |
Same here DD is an extremely slow test taker, but her older sibling does extremely well on standardized test NMSF with minimal prep |
Mine got a 1050. His UW GPA is a 3.2 from a private school. Weighted is maybe 3.3. |
It shows what he needs to study. My kid's weak score is writing. He's terrible at grammar. He'll need to work on that for the SAT/ACT. |
Oh and he’s in algebra 2 this year so hopefully his math score will improve. |

2e 10th grader failing more classes than passing. 1400
Sigh. I hope this helps him see what he is capable of. |
| DS an 11th grader in FCPS did this backwards. Took SAT last June and got a 1520. PSAT this year was 1490/223. Think he wants to take another stab at SAT. Seems crazy to me, but his college reach 75th percentiles are 1540+. |
This isn’t true for most kids in this area, as most have the math that is tested on the standardized tests prior to junior year. |
