In a nutshell, more likely for your demographics to have it, less important it becomes and vice versa.

Unfortunately, being legacy is way more important at Ivies than being National Merit Scholar.

Man, I already feel bummed about my kid’s score just reading the handful of posts here.

Not very important, at most schools. It’s entirely based on your scores, which colleges will see anyway when you submit your application. As noted on this thread, some colleges give significant scholarships to NMSFs, so the status is obviously significant in that case. Other colleges like to highlight the number of NMSFs attending, so maybe it provides a small edge at those schools.

How important NMSF is in ivy leagues college admission (assuming you already have a good SAT/ACT score)?

I had two kids that were NMSF, excellent GPAs and activities including leadership. Rejected at all Ivies (well two waitlists that never moved). It’s not helpful if you’re white or Asian.

+1 White DD was a NMF/scholar and had a perfect SAT score on her only attempt. Perfect grades, great ECs, all the rest. Didn’t help with any Ivy admissions. I also don’t think a URM who is a NMSF will have any edge over an otherwise identical URM who has high Act and SAT scores but is not a NMSF.

If you don't mind me asking, where did she get in/end up? TIA.

What time were scores released? Wondering for Maryland tomorrow.

We had ours by 9:15 this morning in MCPS

Isn't NMSF essentially saying one has a high score? Wouldn't the student's SAT/ACT convey the same information?

DP.. honestly, I wouldn't have my kids go to any of those schools, even with a full ride. I'm not hankering for ivies, either.

everyone is different. My cousin went from almost failing out of a W school to the University of Idaho to earning a PhD in neuroscience at an Ivy w/ lab work at NIH. He's now very successful in his field.

your mileage may vary

That’s a really odd list.
Florida no longer offers full rides to out of state students as of this year. It was a state wide program though - so it’s very odd they included many Florida schools but not the top 2 (UF and FSU).

DD got it this morning at 7:30

My DDs was "pending" when I checked. Looked closer at her info and realized her birthday is wrong on the test info, and it doesn't match the info on the College Board website. Ugh. Anyone know how much of a pain is this going to be?

My kid got 1280....97%. I feel good about that, but I see some test prep in their future this summer. 99% percentile in reading/writing and 92% in math. Math actually came up a lot since last year, so I think with some more preparation, their score could go up quite a bit more. I don't know like 1550 high, though. It's kind of crazy that it's 97%, and I'm not sure whether to be disappointed?????

Is your child in grade 10?

Mine is in grade 11 and was low 1400s and I think was 97th percentile.
