| DS had got one question wrong is writing, so 38 37 38, what is his chance of NMSF in MD |
| Guaranteed. |
| Watch out. You made some mistakes in your post, and there is a frustrated English teacher wannabee out there who will give you unsolicited (and useless) feedback on your writing! |

Congrats to your DS! Sounds like college tuition won't be a problem! There are other schools that also offer full rides for National Merit Finalists.

DP.. honestly, I wouldn't have my kids go to any of those schools, even with a full ride. I'm not hankering for ivies, either. |
| How important is NMSF in college admission? |
Not sure about that, he is targeting top 60 or so (ie UMDCP) no FA but can’t afford 70k colleges |
Not very important, at most schools. It’s entirely based on your scores, which colleges will see anyway when you submit your application. As noted on this thread, some colleges give significant scholarships to NMSFs, so the status is obviously significant in that case. Other colleges like to highlight the number of NMSFs attending, so maybe it provides a small edge at those schools. |
It helps but not a huge factor for top colleges as they attract plenty of top scorers, it’s important everywhere else, specially schools offering scholarships as such schools won’t get attention of these top scorers without incentives so they literally try to buy them with bribe scholarships. |
How important NMSF is in ivy leagues college admission (assuming you already have a good SAT/ACT score)? |

Parent with first child in high school here. DS took the PSAT in October, his junior year at FCPS. His score looks good but I understand the cutoff is high in VA.
What's next? Will there be a notification/instructions/guidance from the school? |
| MD has the highest cutoff last year, VA cutoff is lower |
You should shoot an email to his school counselor so he/she can keep you updated. You can email NMF as well. |
| DS 1460 with NMS of 219 (36, 37, 36.5) |
It doesn’t help Asian applicants but quite helpful if you are Black or Hispanic. For Caucasians, it’s a wash unless you are coming from a underprivileged rural or inner city school or were home schooled. |
