I did not read OP’s post as from someone who “freaks out and panics”. I do read it as from someone concerned about this area’s inability to get back to normal life, which is a legitimate concern both at a policy and a personal level. If a lot of your friends continue to be hyper cautious, it will affect your social life. Outdoor masks are one indicator of a hyper cautious attitude that everyone can monitor, even if not all instances are indicative of hyper cautiousness.

She sounds totally freaked out and panicked to me. Otherwise why would she even care in the slightest that someone has a mask on outdoors. I don't notice.or care and I can't imagine being upset enough about it to write about it on DCUM.

They must not know any Asians many have worn masks outdoors for decades.

The issue of hyper Covid cautiousness very much does exist in this area. It’s what closed schools for 1.5 years and still gives us overly restrictive quarantine policies.

No the problem is people like you who are hanging on to what was happening a year ago instead of looking around at what is happening now. Kids are in school. quarantine policies are changing.

Get. over. it. For your kids sake and everyone's sake, focus on the now.

Oh, I am focusing on the now. I am extremely happy that kids are back in school. Mine are in DCPS where quarantine policies are slightly less restrictive. But I will not let you pretend that the Covid response wasn’t overly extreme and politicized in this area. I have too much of an international perspective on this to not know that is the case. What this area did to kids last year was too harmful to be swept under the rug as you would like to do. The next pandemic will come, and we must do better in the future, as well as keep working to repair last year’s damage.

MoCo resident here and YES, this is what I’ve thought all along, that it’s some big competition for all these type-As. I’m very grateful for the high vaccination rates and that things never got as bad here (relatively speaking) but some folks take that as a sign that some of the more extreme measures are the reason and still necessary.

Yeah I have a couple (formerly) close friends that are still just so isolated that I don’t know we will ever re-connect. Saw one in the neighborhood park with her family recently and they literally ran away from us because we did not have masks on (they all had n95s). Our kids used to be friends too.

These aren’t even older, high risk people. These are friends of mine in their 30s with no significant health issues and are fully vaccinated.

When I leave the area - elsewhere in the US or even locally, in PG or even DC - it is still not so extreme, especially with the Zooming and masking. What is it specifically about MoCo that makes so many people OBSESSED with continuing Covid restrictions?

I was going to say the high concenrration of highly educated and informed residents who are well aware of the risks and believe in science, but isn't that compatable. But MoCo has NIH and they probably mostly live in MoCo as opposed to the district or NoVa. Hmm maybe that makes a difference?

I wear in any crowded outdoor space. I do believe the risk of catching Covid is close to nil. But I love not catching other viruses and will use any excuse to wear them in the winter and probably will until Covid is endemic.

Yeah I have a couple (formerly) close friends that are still just so isolated that I don’t know we will ever re-connect. Saw one in the neighborhood park with her family recently and they literally ran away from us because we did not have masks on (they all had n95s). Our kids used to be friends too.

I don't care so much about outside but we are pretty much done with a few families given how they've behaved and its not worth the risk of us catching covid from them. Its not worth the risks.

However, the majority of the county is fake covid careful and they talk like they are but when you listen to what they say they are not.

This is how I see it too pp. Sometimes I forget to take the mask off, or have another stop to make. It's not a big deal.

Assume OP must have some untreated anxiety about seeing other people doing something they don't want to do, and feeling less than or lost. Otherwise, I really don't understand.

People can be outside without masks in MoCo, people can eat inside without masks in MoCo. Some people chose to wear masks outside, for reasons others don't know. It's perfectly ok OP. Chill.

What’s up with me? I don’t base my assumptions on what I read on DCUM. I actually know people in real life who I know have excessive Covid anxiety and therefore wear masks outdoors.

Maybe they know you are behaving poorly, which puts them at risk, so common sense is when they see you to wear them. Why do you care if someone is being careful and wearing them outdoors. You don't know if they have health issues or at high risk.

Same same. They’re literally afraid of our family because my son goes to school now and isn’t still home schooled.

Meanwhile, I got my booster and no longer wear my mask to school drop off - and I’m the only one! I am NOT a trumped. Progressive Democrat who understands science in a county where 90% are vaccinated and case numbers are increasingly low.
