Josh Duggar arrested and in federal custody

When you are abused as a child, it stays with you. And you can't talk about it, or even tell most people in your life, for the same reason people on this thread demanded that factual description of what abuse occurred be deleted from the thread. What was done to you, if you were abused, becomes part of you, and one of the reasons it is so hard to heal and move on is that you see how people (like the "average Joes" on this thread who were never abused) just would rather not know. But this means they don't want to know what is now part of YOU, so you come to realize that whoever hurt you also changed you so now you are so distasteful and disturbing to people who were never abused themselves that they would rather just look away and not know.

The lives of those young girls who were abused ended the day of the abuse, even if they weren't literally murdered. They will never be able to move past what happened, and they will never be able to view the world and people as essentially good, not in the way that people who have the luxury of turning their heads and refusing to know can do.

I don't think a person who has never been abused can fully understand this. But the comments by people here who don't even want to know about this kind of abuse cuts me to the heart.

Honestly I could believe she didn’t know the extent of it. He’s clearly a porn and s*x addict who was looking for more and more extreme stuff. She had that tracking program on his computer and it likely didn’t trip any alerts - because he had enough technical know-how to install a browser on a different hard drive partition and possibly even a different OS, and so it was completely hidden from the tracking program. And most people have no clue how terrible some of the material is on the dark web.

Unfortunately, until this case, I never knew either. The horror, evil, and depravity that exists in some dark corners is mind-blowing to me.

Everyone freaked out when I posted what the content of the video was.

People need to understand what is going on.

I mean, on some level, in this case, ignorance IS bliss. What's the average Joe supposed to do about dark web child sexual abuse? What does our knowledge bring to the problem?

1. The "average Joe" needs to know that this is NOT "normal porn", because without that knowledge the average Joe might not understand the depth of the depravity and the severity of the crime; they might not fully recognize it when they have a brush with someone into this kind of thing. They might be more inclined to forgive or overlook, OR they might not recognize the signs that someone close to them is into this sick stuff. For example, an average Joe spouse might be uncomfortable that their husband is into porn, but not realize that the presence of that Tor browser could indicate that what he is viewing isn't in the same category as the kind of porn the average Joe understands.

2. I DO think it is important for the average Joe to fully understand what this filth is and to feel the kind of anger, disgust, and revulsion such knowledge brings, because the attitudes and knowledge of the average Joe largely dictate what a society is willing to accept. I think it is important for anyone like Josh who has those tendencies to realize that acting on their sick desires for this material will result in absolute and permanent exclusion from society. Josh is surrounded by people who shield themselves from full knowledge of the darker things in life, and this is partly why he was able and willing to do what he did and also to expect (rightfully) that his half-comprehending family and friends would overlook his vices when discovered because they wouldn't fully understand them anyway.

3. Average Joes who get angry enough as they gain realization of an issue are more likely to actively seek ways to demand changes to society and laws and their community. You need the full brunt of that disgust and anger that comes with complete knowledge, because that kind of awakening is what drives change in society. We need that. If you can't be bothered to feel a twinge of discomfort on behalf of these victimized children, all because you prefer to turn away and focus on your vanilla-perfect average Joe life, you are part of the problem. You are. How many abused children could have been seen and helped earlier if the adults in their world were diligent, informed, and ready to be alert to something wrong? As someone who was abused as a child, I remember every time an adult in my world saw something or suspected something, but didn't do anything, and I know it was because they didn't want to deal with a scene or a conflict or unpleasantness.

4. I think the victims of these crimes deserve our thoughts and our indignation. Choosing to close your eyes and willfully look away from the sordid details means that you are closing your eyes and wilfully looking away from the victims themselves. If you have ever been abused, you will know how isolating it is, even years later, to feel damaged and "othered" by what happened. If you don't know that, you can probably imagine how that might feel (I hope you are willing to do that, anyway). A great deal of evil happens in our world, not because people don't see it, but because they prefer not to allow themselves to know.

I completely agree. I posted a very vague description of what I understand the particular video he had on his possession to be about and it was deleted and I respect that. But I do think people should google “Peter scully” (I know the last name is right not positive on first name and not going to google again) and just read the brief Wikipedia article depicting the videos he made. That’s what josh Duggar paid to watch. That’s not “porn”.

I don't.

DP. I disagree with this. A very small number of very deviant criminals created or viewed a very small number of terrible videos of terrible crimes. The exact nature of the crimes doesn't need to be widely discussed. That doesn't respect the victims, it's the opposite. And potentially makes more victims, using logic similar to the logic of criminalizing viewing videos.

You are such a privileged person. I truly envy you.

But you don't understand the situation, and your attitude is a tremendous luxury. That doesn't mean I wouldn't change places with you if I could.

Apparently you don't understand why possessing these videos is criminalized, if you think we need to be discussing them in detail. "For the sake of the victims."

I'm sorry about your having been abused. I was too. I have the opposite view about how graphic a description this warrants in this forum. I agree it shouldn't be called porn. It is criminal torture, rape, and assault. It should be called that. Going further, as one pp was hell-bent on doing, can retraumatize people, and pp was rather callous about it.

This isn't a one-answer-fits-all. That said, pp could call it out for the crime it is and guide people to more info without narrating the horror.

I don't think he'll kill himself; at least not just himself sadly. I could see him being the type to kill his wife & kids then himself, like he's "sparing" them from the pain of living on Earth & they'll all be together in the afterlife.

I hope I'm wrong. I also hope they're are super strict guidelines around the place he'll be able to see the family. Hopefully not at his home where he could access knives etc.

Honestly your prediction sounds believable, and it’s scary

I feel like he is the type who thinks he can spin this and it’ll all go away just like the last scandal did. TLC gave the daughters Counting On and even brought back Jim Bob and Michelle. Between Jim Bob’s past in politics and Josh’s own aspirations, they are thinking of how to spin this ala Larry Craig. It’ll be some
Misunderstanding and profess that he’s confessing his sins and opening up a church for fellow sinners who struggle with CP addiction.

I think just being aware of the general theme of what’s in these videos. And they aren’t rare, and they aren’t viewed by a very small handful of people. Think of how many people in your zip code are sex offenders for child porn (it’s probably more than a handful). You have to realize for most of these people, it’s not videos of 15 or 14 year old girls. Or doctored pictures of younger children. If you understand what’s actually being created - and in some cases LIVE STREAMED- you might not just roll your eyes and say “gross, of course he downloaded child porn, he is a gross dude”. You’ll realize what he actually downloaded to enjoy.

And those are the types of people who need to google what exactly it is that he had on his computer. I feel like “child porn” can encompass a lot of things and people will try to imagine that “it probably wasn’t anything all that bad”. What josh apparently had was bad. Google Peter Scully Wikipedia page to see what he had on his computer. It’s so bad that even alluding to what it was gets deleted. But that’s not something you can pray your way out of. That’s like Jeffrey Dahmer level videos.

I posted one thing that was very vague and it got deleted, and I am sorry that I added the (vague) details that I did. I understand it’s difficult to read and I probably shouldn’t have sprung it on people just looking for celebrity gossip. But at the same time, the people who view this thread as “pop culture and entertainment” maybe don’t realize really what he is being charged with and maybe if people knew- as horrifying as it is to read- it wouldn’t get swept under the rug like how he molested like ALL OF HIS SISTERS got swept under the rug in the end.

The details were unnecessary for this site. Others have been clear enough that this is not CP and provided links if people want to read further on specifics. That should be sufficient.
