Honestly I could believe she didn’t know the extent of it. He’s clearly a porn and s*x addict who was looking for more and more extreme stuff. She had that tracking program on his computer and it likely didn’t trip any alerts - because he had enough technical know-how to install a browser on a different hard drive partition and possibly even a different OS, and so it was completely hidden from the tracking program. And most people have no clue how terrible some of the material is on the dark web.

Unfortunately, until this case, I never knew either. The horror, evil, and depravity that exists in some dark corners is mind-blowing to me.

Everyone freaked out when I posted what the content of the video was.
Ignorance isn’t bliss.
People need to understand what is going on.

I mean, on some level, in this case, ignorance IS bliss. What's the average Joe supposed to do about dark web child sexual abuse? What does our knowledge bring to the problem?

1. The "average Joe" needs to know that this is NOT "normal porn", because without that knowledge the average Joe might not understand the depth of the depravity and the severity of the crime; they might not fully recognize it when they have a brush with someone into this kind of thing. They might be more inclined to forgive or overlook, OR they might not recognize the signs that someone close to them is into this sick stuff. For example, an average Joe spouse might be uncomfortable that their husband is into porn, but not realize that the presence of that Tor browser could indicate that what he is viewing isn't in the same category as the kind of porn the average Joe understands.

2. I DO think it is important for the average Joe to fully understand what this filth is and to feel the kind of anger, disgust, and revulsion such knowledge brings, because the attitudes and knowledge of the average Joe largely dictate what a society is willing to accept. I think it is important for anyone like Josh who has those tendencies to realize that acting on their sick desires for this material will result in absolute and permanent exclusion from society. Josh is surrounded by people who shield themselves from full knowledge of the darker things in life, and this is partly why he was able and willing to do what he did and also to expect (rightfully) that his half-comprehending family and friends would overlook his vices when discovered because they wouldn't fully understand them anyway.

3. Average Joes who get angry enough as they gain realization of an issue are more likely to actively seek ways to demand changes to society and laws and their community. You need the full brunt of that disgust and anger that comes with complete knowledge, because that kind of awakening is what drives change in society. We need that. If you can't be bothered to feel a twinge of discomfort on behalf of these victimized children, all because you prefer to turn away and focus on your vanilla-perfect average Joe life, you are part of the problem. You are. How many abused children could have been seen and helped earlier if the adults in their world were diligent, informed, and ready to be alert to something wrong? As someone who was abused as a child, I remember every time an adult in my world saw something or suspected something, but didn't do anything, and I know it was because they didn't want to deal with a scene or a conflict or unpleasantness.

4. I think the victims of these crimes deserve our thoughts and our indignation. Choosing to close your eyes and willfully look away from the sordid details means that you are closing your eyes and wilfully looking away from the victims themselves. If you have ever been abused, you will know how isolating it is, even years later, to feel damaged and "othered" by what happened. If you don't know that, you can probably imagine how that might feel (I hope you are willing to do that, anyway). A great deal of evil happens in our world, not because people don't see it, but because they prefer not to allow themselves to know.

DP. I disagree with this. A very small number of very deviant criminals created or viewed a very small number of terrible videos of terrible crimes. The exact nature of the crimes doesn't need to be widely discussed. That doesn't respect the victims, it's the opposite. And potentially makes more victims, using logic similar to the logic of criminalizing viewing videos.

You are such a privileged person. I truly envy you.

But you don't understand the situation, and your attitude is a tremendous luxury. That doesn't mean I wouldn't change places with you if I could.

Apparently you don't understand why possessing these videos is criminalized, if you think we need to be discussing them in detail. "For the sake of the victims."

I think just being aware of the general theme of what’s in these videos. And they aren’t rare, and they aren’t viewed by a very small handful of people. Think of how many people in your zip code are sex offenders for child porn (it’s probably more than a handful). You have to realize for most of these people, it’s not videos of 15 or 14 year old girls. Or doctored pictures of younger children. If you understand what’s actually being created - and in some cases LIVE STREAMED- you might not just roll your eyes and say “gross, of course he downloaded child porn, he is a gross dude”. You’ll realize what he actually downloaded to enjoy.

+1 million. I think people hear “child p*rnography” and think pictures of young teens. Still illegal but that’s not what Josh was accused of viewing ... at all. What he was viewing was not even in that same realm. People have their heads in the sand about this, understandably so because it’s horrible and disgusting.

Yes. That does seem strange. Did he realize that the feds were on to him and then stop right away?

I'm not a dark web expert but I think it's more likely that he navigated to the disgusting little corner he was looking for and then downloaded everything he could get, and maybe didn't know how to find other corners. There might have been an element of thinking the less time he spent searching the less likely he'd be to be caught.

Again, nothing said tells me that the 'average Joe' can do jack sh!t about this. It's abhorrent and awful. Don't get me wrong. But my knowing about it - as an average person - changes nothing. Because the average person doesn't engage in this sh!t. They simply don't. The average person may engage in porn, but this ain't that. And the average person knows that.

I highly doubt she believes it to be true. She’ll always believe someone else did it.

I don’t think she is interested in finding out for herself what he had on his computer. She thinks he has a “pornography addiction”. And that some random “ex convict” downloaded more pornography. What’s appalling about these fundamentalist groups is that they put no distinction between pornography made by consenting, paid adults and videos of child rape. There is .... a difference. And for these Christian groups to lump them all in the same “viewing porn is immoral!” category just means they won’t be able to distinguish from a dude downloading legal, adult porn and a dude downloading the sort of depravity that Josh downloaded.

Half of Reddit is clutching their pearls even more than usual, if that counts as "protesting".

Or could he have saved it somewhere and not need to go back?

You don't seem to understand that this kind of thing happens to so many kids BECAUSE they are surrounded by "average Joe" type people like you who don't notice and don't WANT to notice. It IS important that the "average Joe" knows this kind of thing is happening because it is the apathy and unwillingness to know/notice unpleasantness that doesn't touch you personally that allows such things to happen on a large scale.

As for the "normal porn" you mention, you should educate yourself on that, too. Start with the New York Times' recent articles about how p*rnhub has long featured many, many underage victims being assaulted. Those things ARE being viewed by what you call the "average Joe", and it is so important this kind of person knows what non-consensual/abusive "p*orn" looks like in that context, too. People like you, with your mindset that you just don't need to know about things that make you feel bad, are the reason this happens: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/04/opinion/sunday/pornhub-rape-trafficking.html.

Please wake up.

I prefer the Reddit threads that call him out for being a true psychopath. We aren’t dealing with your run of the mill pervert. He is a sick, dangerous man. He said “is there CP on these computers?” because these people are PROUD of it. It’s next level insanity. He deserves no mercy and I hope the judge and jury sentence him to life without parole, for the sake of society and the safety of his family.
