Not sure why everyone is so attached to one trip anyway.

This. Is. How. It. Spreads.

But unless they force people to stop traveling, those who do travel will just bring it back to the rest of us. You’ll be waiting forever if the think the entire US is just going to suddenly comply.

Because we are children and very few of us are willing to make even the smallest compromise in the name of the common good. Not traveling would help to slow it down and dissipate the effect on the health care system. Let's hope your kid doesn't break their leg or get in accident whilst all this is going on.

Why not just stop flights/close land borders? Seems simpler than enforcing this.

Because closing borders has severe geopolitical and economic ramifications. This way the cost of self-quarantining is only on travellers. If you get to Israel and can't prove the ability to stay in a hotel or home for 14 days without leaving, tough luck. I bet Mossad has no problem turning you back at the airport/border and refusing entry.

What about the staffing to police/ensure people actually quarantine? How do you quarantine in a hotel with no supplies?

I'm in a similar situation. I'm planning to fly to TX this weekend, but not sure if I should cancel.

They're not going to do that. They're just going to request a hotel receipt most likely showing an ability to pay for 14 days or confirmation from a local resident that you are staying with them for such a time.

They're not going to put armed guards at every hotel. Now if you want to act like a child and break the quarantine while in Israel, don't be surprised if you end up in a sh*thole prison and trying to call together a legal team with international jurisdiction.

As for the supplies, again - you are expected to have access to it OR you can do what the Diamond Princess passenger did after he voluntarily self-quarantined in Japan. Which was have room service every day.

I’m not arguing with you I’m just being a realist. People aren’t going to do this voluntarily and the government won’t force them because of lobbyists/big business/stock market.

Thoughts on San Diego in early April?

Totally non-essential, traveling with a 4 year old. Neither of us has known health issues. Only loss would be the non-refundable flights.

Thoughts on Barcelona for spring break next month?

Spain has the 7th highest outbreak response and is 1/12th the size of the United States. You decide.

Would you let your teenaged child fly from Miami to Cancun for a week right now?

Or get appendicitis or croup or RSV or, or, or. Overloading ERs has massive effects on everyone. Let's hope it doesn't get that far. Let's hope that spring/summer means that the virus goes into remission until Fall and gives us a reprieve and ability to catch our breaths and figure out what to do next. Let's hope. Because alternatives are scary. Many say this likely has the same death rate as the flu when all is said and done - but we have a vaccine for the flu - we don't for this. And it appears to only hit the old and infirm - meaning that the percentage is actually much higher for them. Let's protect them by not further spreading it and by taking this seriously so that they, too, take it seriously.

It’s not that I don’t care, but I think I’ll get it no matter what. My kids are in ES & preschool and IME that’s my biggest risk for illness.

She is 16, I am 50, and we are both very healthy with no underlying issues.

Thoughts?

If I'm not mistaken, west coast of Florida and specifically Tampa were the first hot spots.

We also have flights to Tampa and hotel reservations at Clearwater Beach. Kids ages 3-10. We are 40 and 41. As of now, we are planning to go.

"We are all young enough not to be of high risk. We don't care if we get it, and if we infect others? Well, it could have been anyone!"
