Holy crap, I'd forgotten about that role! Thanks for the blast from the past, PP. God, I loved ER... |
Colleges don't want kids who are going to fail. Unless they are bribing their way through all four years its doubtful these kids will pass the classes. If you have to pay 6 or 7 figures to get in some of these schools that are not even ivy, the kids are probably dumb as a box of rocks. And some of the kids were absolutely aware. Give me a break |
How about we focus on college admission? Because my kids are in elementary. I want this figured out. And parents and kids should know that there is zero tolerance for lying on applications. |
It's not legal to "massage" a transcript (what does this even mean)? Or "perfume" an essay. I found it interesting that Singer posed this scam as a "side door" for parents, saying that there was the "front door" (earning admission) and the "back door" (donating to the institution & using connections), but that the back door cost 10x more and was not guaranteed. |
Breaking news: Rich kids with low scores do just fine in college. |
Someone was under investigation for something else, I think, and gave info leading to this. I think the first person to fold was a bribed soccer coach, then Singer gave all the parents up hoping to cut a deal. The FBI press conference essentially said they were just given info while pursuing a different investigation. |
Many are. And some for just the accusation that’s then found to be untrue. Son of a family friend was accused of rape at college. The college immediately told him he had to stay off campus while the investigation took place. Police found evidence that the young woman lied and the charges against him were dropped. The university still brought him before the board for a disciplinary hearing where they agreed he’d broken the school honor code. He was expelled. The parents consulted with a lawyer who told them they would be wasting their money as universities operate as independent entities with their own rules. |
Yes, it is legal to "massage" a transcript. A college counselor can make your volunteering sound really good vs. I did 100 hours at a soup kitchen. Most people have somebody "edit" their kids essay, even if it is a family memeber. |
I read that it started because something was off in an audit of his charity (tax audit? 990 audit?) and then they started looking into big donors to his charity and finding out they all had kids who were applying to college and getting in at the same places. |
Some kids didn't know. I think Huffman/Macy kids were kept in the dark. I think Loughlin's kids (at least 2nd daughter) knew because HS counselor saw the bogus crew involvement for both sisters and questioned it to #2. One kid was in on the conference call w/ dad & Singer. She knew for sure. |
Let's start expelling every under age drinker and kids that smoke pot so we can get back to education. Besides these kids are criminals, I don't want them in our schools and they don't deserve to be. |
This article is gross. I mean the Loughlin daughter is gross. She posts on YouTube, at some point, that she doesn’t care about school, just games and partying. And apparently decorating her dorm for insta sponsorship. And going to Fiji and NY to “work” when school started. This answers my question of how the fraud kids fare after the fact. I was wondering if they cheat their way through school, or fail out, or persuade profs to give them Cs. Cracks me up that their parents spent so much, and the children don’t even care! Anyone remember the Apatow girl and how little she cared for school? |
They can't change your grades -- that's what "massage" would mean to me when it comes to a transcript. Proofing is not "perfuming," that wiould be doing some rewriting for the kid which would not be legal. |
It is not be figured out or solved. This country is really not a meritocracy although people pretend and have been raised to believe it is. A relative handful are of middle and lower-income students are allowed access to elite institutions to keep up the veneer of merit and the myth of economic mobility across generations.
The only universities in this country that seem to care only about academic performance is MIT and CalTech. I would be shocked if anyone tried to bribe their way in there because it is too hard and they really don’t care about athletics etc. This particular scam may die but another scheme will be in place by the time your kid graduates from high school. The wealthy elite will always find a way to make sure their kids families remain at the top of the heap. |
We have been rewatching it all, now that my kids are teens, and we have Hulu. Loving it. So sad about Dr. M, though. But, I can guess he probably has a tremendous ego. ![]() |
