Hayfield Football Coach Fired

Like 20 pages ago weren't people saying this Hayfield school wouldn't win post season anyway? So unless they were slated to win, not getting to play in post season games iputs them in the same position (no title). It is a minor slap on the wrist. Eh!

The kids still get to play football, still hone their skills, can still get recruited and walk away empty handed with no title just like they would if they played post season games. Unless this team had a chance to win it doesn't feel like a big punishment. Canceling their season would be another story!

You’re absolutely correct. Overton has gotten these kids looks and helping them get recruited. Things some other local coaches may not have done.

Yes, I found interesting was no suspension of coach in this like sanctioned team however many years ago when the coach could not be there for summer training or first 3 games and in Washington, the Roosevelt HS case they are saying kids could be suspended a year from playing.

Probably means they didn’t have any dirt on the coach. They can’t suspend the athletic director or the school register. When those guys fumble the ball, they punish the program.

Back in the 90’s, they investigated WT Woodson because Greg Williams’s dad rented an apartment for him to attend. This has been going on for ever.

Kara Lawson's family lived in the West Potomac zone but they rented an apartment in the West Springfield zone for her to live in during the week so she could play basketball there.

A few years later there was an investigation over a group of transfers to West Springfield who had played for the coach's AAU team. No sanctions and the coach is still there many years later.

Yeah, you had coaches admitting a kids family member rented an apartment so their kid could go to school to play the particular sport.

If this has been condoned for so long it wouldn’t make sense to punish a program now unless this is a new rule or Hayfield committed more violations.

If "this one guy in 1992 cheated too" is Overton's best defense, then he's in trouble.

Your most recent example is from 2001.

If Overtin hadn't been so greedy/dumb as to recruit 30 kids instead of 1, he wouldn't be in this mess.

Aren’t all of those examples residency issues for player eligibility and NOT recruiting violations? Prior posters say VHSL focused on recruiting violations, which is supported by no mention of forfeits by VHSL. All to say, all these examples aren’t relevant for either side unless saying coaches or boosters paid for the apartments in past cases. And, yeah 30> 1. Too bad no live stream of the appeal today as would love to hear first hand v the spin that will come out of it whatever the result.

I read above poster to say VHSL focus will be on the coach and school and not the kids, but kids will of course still feel the sting if cannot go to playoffs for 2 years. Sounds like all the band, dance and other seniors already stung by being shut out of recognition night.

Prediction if school 2 year post season ban not appealed: Overton will shop himself to a new school outside of FCPS for next fall. Kids will follow.

He’s not staying at Hayfield in the aftermath of a scandal. If this sticks, Overton is gone and so is the athletic director.

And where is the principal and athletic director in all this?!?! How have they not stepped up and made comments about this mess? I have seen the head coach and assistant coaches (and parents/community) all over social media defending their position. But no word from the principal and athletic director? Come on man! Be a leader!!

Do you want them to give some current examples to get someone else in trouble?

It has to be recruiting. I don’t think they could prove a kid moved into Hayfield zoning from PW county just for football when FCPS is so much better than PWCPS.

So AC blames it all on one person. Wonder if they think it’s same mom that head Coach talked about on his Facebook?

Overton said, Hayfield has given the VHSL everything they asked for. This is interesting. Let’s see what happens later today.

Hayfield team chaplain has a change.org petition currently signed by 1000 (no way to tell if kids, adults, double signatures or who is actually located in Hayfield community or even VA), but post here as between AC X post that they did everything right that told to do and petition, get idea of story will present today at appeal. From prior posts, chaplain’s church in Fredericksburg and kids were at Freedom and then Hayfield.

My question- do FCPS lawyers go to these to represent Hayfield?
