You never answered the question about all the private school and DC kids and where they resided last spring.

You can deny racism/white supremacy all you want, but it is a part of the equation.

LOL. No. There is nothing racist about expecting someone to follow the rules.

Right, he probably could have gotten away with it had he not made the dramatic changes at such scale and in such a short amount of time. There is no correlation between being a successful football coach and having an above average IQ. But, football coaches are more prone to making poor judgments and operating in the ethical gray zone because they are focused on winning and outcomes, and the ones with lower IQs are more susceptible to finding themselves in the situation Overton is currently in.

What is the relevance of IQ? One thing that appears not to be in dispute is that Overton is a good coach. His teams are disciplined.

He would have to do a good job coaching a non-stacked, regular public HS team with no hand picked transfers before we can say if he is actuay a good coach. He has never coached a normal team before. If he wants ti sjow he is a good coach, he can transfer to Lewis without his entourage and start winning games

It strikes me this guy could take lesser talent and coach them to respectability. His teams are known for their disciplined play. But no special kudos to leading a mediocre team to a 3-6;record.,

I read above poster to say VHSL focus will be on the coach and school and not the kids, but kids will of course still feel the sting if cannot go to playoffs for 2 years. Sounds like all the band, dance and other seniors already stung by being shut out of recognition night.

Prediction if school 2 year post season ban not appealed: Overton will shop himself to a new school outside of FCPS for next fall. Kids will follow.

He’s not staying at Hayfield in the aftermath of a scandal. If this sticks, Overton is gone and so is the athletic director.

And where is the principal and athletic director in all this?!?! How have they not stepped up and made comments about this mess? I have seen the head coach and assistant coaches (and parents/community) all over social media defending their position. But no word from the principal and athletic director? Come on man! Be a leader!!

He's never coached a team that wasn't heavily stacked and recruited, so no way of knowing if he is any good at coaching...

So the punishment doesn't follow the coach? That doesn't make sense.

Coach Overton reposted something yesterday by a Jake Rohm at DC News Now that says the VSHL sanctions are a “recommendation.” As in VHSL recommends a 2 year post-season ban, but not final until appeal over? Or weirder interpretation, VHSL recommends Hayfield not play post-season, but Hayfield could? I didn’t make enough popcorn to last me until Nov 4 appeal day on this one with how everyone spinning everything.

Good players follow him for a reason. He can coach. But what matters to Overton is being in the D1 pipeline. He coaches at Mike Locksley's Maryland camp, the only high school coach to do so. The issue here isn't his competence, but his judgement and that of the administration. By the way, I looked at the Virginia recruiting rankings. Hayfield has only one player in the top 50, Overton's nephew. He is a mid ranked three star. Virginia has no five stars, and a handful of four stars. Not an easy picture statistically. Tough dream to sell.

That's what an appeal is! VHSL assessed the penalty. It either stands or the school appeals.
When they appeal, the committee decides whether to overturn, uphold or INCREASE the punishment.

It sounds like he can lead young men, and has surrounded himself with people who know football and they can all coach. He just needs to do it the right way with creating a program that takes the kids in his HS and stop recruiting.

Not sure if wants to do that, but I think he could if he was willing to grow it organically. Not sure we’ll ever know.

Coach and his staff know they can land anywhere safely and none of this will stick to them. The Principal and AD probably busy trying to figure out how to keep their jobs, because they won’t be able to follow Overton. Someone posted earlier the Asst Superintendent is mixed up in this as well- so will see if she can come out clean too-guessing she, Principal and AD will all say they had no idea and coach and staff say sure they did the stuff but didn’t know doing anything wrong.

No, it’s the AD’s responsibility to see who is eligible. They basically look at age and grades, but when residency allegations come up, they should verify those as well. The Assistant Superintendent basically does the work for the superintendents office.

Not getting to play post season isn't the end of the world and doesn't really hurt the team. Like 20 pages ago weren't people saying this Hayfield school wouldn't win post season anyway? So unless they were slated to win, not getting to play in post season games iputs them in the same position (no title). It is a minor slap on the wrist. Eh!

The kids still get to play football, still hone their skills, can still get recruited and walk away empty handed with no title just like they would if they played post season games. Unless this team had a chance to win it doesn't feel like a big punishment. Canceling their season would be another story!

I think Hayfield can still win the National District Title which is a nice accomplishment. Some Northern Va high schools have never won a single district title in football.
