I 100% condemn Israel's atrocities. They are war criminals. I am 40+, female, attorney, and make a good amount of money. The more education you have about the region, the more likely you are to understand that Israel is not a good actor. My far right Christian neighbors, however, believe that Israel has the second coming of Christ on their side and God is working with them to destroy Muslims. There is a large discrepancy in education here. |
I don't think it was part of a sinister plot from Hamas. Its looking more and more like simple incompetence. Its not like these guys are engineers. |
And here is why the Internet and social media are going to make this war even uglier than it is. Something happens, and the two sides will share different stories about what happened. People will point to the story that supports the viewpoint they already hold and say that it's the truth. Meanwhile we don't know what is real and what isn't because both sides have a reason to mislead and persuade. And no one here is going to change each other's mind. |
There is no chance Israel would purposely target that hospital hours before the US president is scheduled to arrive. It is a well known hospital. It's been there for years. It's a Christian hospital. It's largely staffed by Doctors Without Borders. Israel is not targeting that building.
Abbas has just cancelled his meeting with Biden and the West Bank is presently rioting. This hospital strike is working out very well for Hamas. |
Interesting. Similar age/income/education here and couldn't disagree more. |
+1 same here. |
Israel is about to host Biden.
US assistance is key for Israel. The US has urged for restraint. So it makes absolutely no tactical sense for Israel to target the hospital. A misfired rocket makes a lot more sense. |
I agree with you. I'm a 30 year old South Asian female attorney, also well-off socioeconomically. I attended a well-regarded IR program for undergrad, so have a reasonably good understanding of geopolitics and international relations. |
I feel like we will never know the truth re whose rocket struck the hospital (was it Israel or was it a failed Hamas rocket). Both sides immediately make claims re the other. I can't believe anything.
There is a 501c3 charity I have worked closely with for 20 years and have served on their board re a disease that happens to be prevalent in Palestine so al-Ahli has a clinic for it. I am beyond devastated no matter who shot that rocket. At the end of the day, hundreds of sick children and selfless medical professionals are dead. |
+1 It's even worse. People dig into their side, convince themselves of its righteousness, and radicalize themselves. |
I don't think the divide is along these lines. My circle is generally highly educated and it's a mix. The one thing I have noticed is that there are a number of white people who were quite ignorant until 9/11 (though in fairness they were fairly young), then had a brief period of Islamophobia, and have spent the last fifteen or so years atoning for that by swinging wildly in the other direction. These are the same people who claim that they're okay with being murdered by aboriginal Americans since they're living on stolen land. I feel a bit sorry for them, since they're obviously struggling with a lot of guilt over their past ignorance. |
If both of you consider this totally clear in terms of Israel being 100% in the wrong, then you could not have attended good schools for your education in anything related to political science or history. I condemn civilian targeting on both sides, but recognize the need for two states here. I am a 37 year old woman with an undergrad degree from Georgetown SFS and a PhD from a top 10 political science department. Background-wise, I am half Ashkenazi, and the other side of the family is mixed (Asian, European). |
Are you Jewish? Most of my friends with higher levels of education and having any level or insight into the region have understood that Israel has created an apartheid state. The only lawyers that I know that disagree with me are Jewish. |
I would hope that is the case (that Israel did not authorize this barbaric attack). Mainstream media are reporting it as carried out by Israel though. It sounds more like a a Russian move (they bombed hospitals and clinics in Syria also). Russians were recorded training HAMAS fighters. Is there any proof as to whom authorized this terrible act? |
Nobody who actually knows what apartheid is thinks that Israel is an apartheid state. |
