Republicans and the debt ceiling

How about we talk about NOT cutting revenue (taxes) and while increasing spending? Republicans have been pulling this trick for years as a political wedge.

It's the best trick. It gives a short term bump to the economy and balloons the debt and makes the deficit worse and then they can scream about that when there is a D in office. The best is temporary tax cuts that don't look terrible according to CBO scoring so they can accuse democrats of raising taxes when they expire

No, but this has nothing to do with the debt limit - we've already spent the money, so to speak. Time to pay the bill.

'so to speak' means we haven't spent the money.

No but the time to do it is during budget negotiations not when it’s time to pay the debt. It’s like if you and your spouse bought your weekly groceries on credit and then didn’t pay the bill. You agreed that weekly groceries should be a certain amount, charged them, and then said you shouldn’t have bought our groceries.

That is not correct. The issue is not about paying the bill. It is about not putting more money on the credit card. The card rejects you because you have reached your limit.
Now you have to try and get more credit.

That doesn't get you anywhere close to cutting the budget deficit, as can be seen by looking at tax brackets in Europe. It is not the rich paying for everything, but instead 40% tax rates or more on middle class, starting around 50-70k.

Guess you don’t understand “cutting tax loopholes”?? They can also raise taxes on Capital Gains and tax it closer to wages.

The previous capital gains tax cuts produced more revenue. Again there is not enough money at the rich to fund government programs at the level liberals want.
Look at Europe's tax brackets, the VAT taxes, and everything else. Middle class pays a lot in taxes.

That's very helpful. Thank you for your contribution.

Clearly a republican sock puppet. If we are heading into austerity we know who is responsible and it’s not Dems.

The dems are 100% at faults for all cuts. Here is Biden’s and democrats bargaining position. We agree to all the cut just please do not make the cuts too big. The republicans control the house but the democratic senate and the president have capitulated to the J6’ers.

Hey democrats you were voted in office to fight for democratic issues not to help the republicans cut those programs.

Seriously what is the point voting democrat when they just roll over? What were the democratic negotiators asking for-immigration reform, gun control, reform of SCOTUS? No the dems went in to the “negotiations” ask what programs can we cut and by how much.

This is a total and complete win for the McCarthy.

Do you mean Kevin McCarthy who needed 15 rounds of voting to be Speaker?! The man is incapable of a total and complete win. Lol.

I am not a Kevin McCarthy fan but you are blind if you can not see how this is a win for Kevin McCarthy and the republicans. The man who took 15 rounds of voting for speaker just forced the democrats to cut to a trillion dollars from the budget and the republicans gave up nothing. They were not even in budget negotiations.

Oh look McCarthy is now in meeting with the president, his sound bites are all over the news, he is equal to the president. Looks like he has a lot of credibility and solidified his position as house speaker.

What exactly do the democrats win here? How is this a win for the democrats?

I dont think Dems are looking for a “win.” They know MAGA are happy to blow up economy. They are looking for path forward. If ppl are upset the “Dems caved” then organize & donate so we get the House back and keep Senate & WH in 2024.

Sorry, sometimes good is good enough.

Remember when the democrats had the senate, house and presidency and could have abolished the debt limit, but said nah?

Manchin Sinema.

Why didn't Democrats do this when Trump wanted to raise the debt ceiling? Because fundamentally Democrats support more government and more spending. That is why they have a weak negotiating position. Their leverage right now is that Biden can pick and choose what spending he wants to do and blame it on Republicans.
No worries, Mitch McConnell will find a way for Republican Senators to get more money from lobbyists and raise the debt ceiling while making it look like they won, just like last time.

I hope Biden finds a way to move forward with 14th Amendment .

Despite what Biden, McCarthy, and the media say, the 14th amendment says debts authorized by law must be honored. If Congress doesn't raise the debt ceiling, then any debts incurred by Biden do not have to be paid. Also, Biden is required by the 14th amendment to make payments on the current debt.

McCarthy has so far been able to heard cats in the house. Biden's clean bill will now be anything but, yet Schumer can't ever accomplish anything.

On top of that all the parties have agreed and said on the record they will not allow a default. So why are the democrats negotiating away their programs? Biden said today he has agreed to a trillion dollars in cuts and he got nothing.

Because default is not an issue, unless Biden tells the Treasury Secretary to not make the debt payments.
This is about whether they want to borrow more money.
So without a debt ceiling increase, Dems lose trillions of dollars in spending, whatever the current deficit is.
With a debt ceiling increase, Dems get to spend more money, whatever Republicans agree to.

Their leverage is Biden can blame them for any problems, as he chooses what programs to spend on to stay within the debt limit.
'Because Republicans won't raise the debt ceiling, Social Security checks might not go out.'

The debts were authorize by law when spending was passed. This is like a guy with a bill due for a service they've already ordered saying the no longer want it and expecting to get out of paying

do you realize that social security checks are a very large part of that trillions in spending?

Good point. It’s definitely looking like Biden and Dems are gonna have to eat a sh*t sandwich to get the debt ceiling raised. Only question is, how big will it be?

Yes, we will need to eat shit because MAGA is willing to blow up the global economy and SOMEONE needs to be the adult. Then once Democrats do the responsible think the corporate media and progressives will shit all over Biden. There is no way out when dealing w/ terrorists because there is no negotiator. The media could expose what’s going on but they choose to bOthE SidEs fascists with Democrats.

McCarthy only has votes for vague partisan statements, not detailed legislation. Republicans always threaten and promise big spending cuts but run and hide from specific cuts. That’s why they always blow up the budget. They cut taxes first promising to cut spending but most of spending is for things they support so all they do is increase the pork and patronage for their donors.
