I am not a Kevin McCarthy fan but you are blind if you can not see how this is a win for Kevin McCarthy and the republicans. The man who took 15 rounds of voting for speaker just forced the democrats to cut to a trillion dollars from the budget and the republicans gave up nothing. They were not even in budget negotiations. Oh look McCarthy is now in meeting with the president, his sound bites are all over the news, he is equal to the president. Looks like he has a lot of credibility and solidified his position as house speaker. What exactly do the democrats win here? How is this a win for the democrats? |
The only way this is win for the democrats would be a default.
This would most likely result in KM losing the speakership. The hardcore right wing house members would fight among them selves. 15- 30 republicans house members would join the democrats and elect Hakeem Jeffries as speaker. Jeffries would quick raise the debt ceiling. Dems would control the house. |
I dont think Dems are looking for a “win.” They know MAGA are happy to blow up economy. They are looking for path forward. If ppl are upset the “Dems caved” then organize & donate so we get the House back and keep Senate & WH in 2024. Sorry, sometimes good is good enough. |
I know. Democrats could steal the win by lowering the debt limit. Grab victory from the jaws of defeat. |
Remember when the democrats had the senate, house and presidency and could have abolished the debt limit, but said nah? |
Good point. It’s definitely looking like Biden and Dems are gonna have to eat a sh*t sandwich to get the debt ceiling raised. Only question is, how big will it be? |
Is slowing the rate of growth of debt a bad thing? |
Time to stop screwing around. Kevin McCarthy can't get a deal because he has absolutely ZERO control of his own caucus, including the nuts who want to burn it all down. Time to invoke the 14th Amendment (section 4) and stop this nonsense. |
Why do we only have to discuss the growth of debt under Democratic presidents? Any idea? Any hypocritical idea? |
No, but this has nothing to do with the debt limit - we've already spent the money, so to speak. Time to pay the bill. |
No, it’s not. That’s why bidens budget proposed a number of deficit reductions. Too bad McCarthy rejected all of them. |
How about we talk about NOT cutting revenue (taxes) and while increasing spending? Republicans have been pulling this trick for years as a political wedge. |
No but the time to do it is during budget negotiations not when it’s time to pay the debt. It’s like if you and your spouse bought your weekly groceries on credit and then didn’t pay the bill. You agreed that weekly groceries should be a certain amount, charged them, and then said you shouldn’t have bought our groceries. |
