Do we think Kamila was told to lose?
|
I assume all the Russian skaters are doping. I doubt the coach or whoever decided to dope just the one skater. |
No, the poor child just self-destructed. I do hope she stays in the sport because she is truly a once-in-a-century skating talent. |
It really doesn't matter what any of us thinks. The sport has a system for adjudicating doping; it was applied in this case. It's fair to say that the adults around Kamila have failed her spectacularly, but it's equally unfair to decide this based on incomplete process. The general public has this stereotype that all doping violations result in automatic quartering in the town square but that's just not the case. IOC didn't want a repeat of Sochi but not in the way you think. 39 Russian athletes were dq'd at Sochi for doping violations. However, upon appeal 28 of them were acquitted, their sanctions were lifted and the medals were returned to them. (Of course acquittals never make the same splash as the original bans but there you are). That's basically three out of four! IOC knows its justice system does. not. work. They didn't want to get tied up in appeals this time, and erred on the side of caution. |
What are you talking about? The IOC didn’t make the decision for Valieva to skate; the CAS did. The IOC wanted her out. |
| Correct but it makes IOC look bad to make reversible decisions en masse. |
If you watched her skate, she was just flustered all the way through, on a range of elements. It wasn't like she just took a couple of discrete falls and otherwise did fine. |
What is the strategy with losing? ^^I don't get it. Seems like the ROC was fighting g tooth & nail to get her to skate, had excuses for every accusation, and practically pushed her onto the rink no matter what the final ruling would be. Seems like she just felt the pressure of the world on her young 15 yr old shoulders. Factor in the last few weeks of the doping scandals/social media/newsheadlines, China's vigorous covid testing and fear of being positive, and trying to nail an insanely difficult routine. Of course she just fell apart. |

If anyone hasn’t seen it, here is the full meltdown video. It starts from the ending part of Kamila’s performance and major drama starts around 4:30.

If she had won any medal, there would be no medal ceremony for the other winners until her situation was resolved. People were already pissed at her for ruining the event for them (in addition to being angry about the possibility of an unfair advantage due to performance enhancing drugs), when I heard she had done poorly I had wondered if she threw the event on purpose since she’s supposed to be such a flawless skater. But obviously, the type of pressure she’s been under for the last week could crack the toughest of nuts. |
Thanks for posting this! |
These poor girls. I read elsewhere that Trusova refused to leave the rink with the rest of the Russian team and people witnessed eteri literally dragging her into the bus.

Just watched the full replay. I hope the CAS is happy with their effort to protect Kamila Valieva from "irreparable harm." That sure worked out! The ROC and the joke of the CAS absolutely ruined the sport. Eteri Tutberidze is an abusive psycho and has been for a long time. She should be banned permanently.
What a disgusting spectacle that was. Anna Shcherbakova sitting totally alone with a vacant expression on her face while only a Russian TV employee and a British volunteer comfort a disintegrating Valieva and Alexandra Trusova throws a screaming tantrum basically encapsulates the total mess and joke ROC and CAS made of this event. Valieva should never have been out there. And if Trusova really thought that doing nothing but jumps with no effort at PCS, especially training alongside others who do better, was enough for a gold medal, then she's delusional. But she is also only 17 and has a psycho coach who lies and manipulates her so I will excuse her behavior. I don't know why but I'm more disgusted with the CAS than anything. Total joke of a decision. At multiple points there have been opportunities to check and ban the Russians and at every point the "arbitrators" cave in. Shcherbakova and Trusova are probably dirty too and just weren't caught. The punishment for Sochi was a farce. |
| I'm of the opinion that children shouldn't compete. You should have to be 18 to compete at the Olympics. |
