Trying Keto but I don't understand

Anonymous
I have been trying Keto for about 3 weeks, but I keep reading conflicting things - people eating fat bombs and stuff to try and 'get their fats in' and then other people saying that if you have weight to lose, you never need to get all your fat macros, because the point is that if you are in ketosis, your body will burn the fat you already have for energy.

I am so lost. Why is it 70/25/5 fat /protein/carbs then? If I have a lot of weight to lose, couldn't I just hardly eat any fat, and my body would just burn the fat I have? I am seriously struggling. I am not eating a lot of fat, my carbs are around 12-15 g a day... I am not hungry at all and having to force myself to eat. Should I be eating more fat?

I only crave fat bombs when I'm pmsing or else I get super hungry. The fatbombs help me not be ravenous right before.

In general, I do find that eating healthier fats daily (avocados, olive oil) does help fill me up so I can do IF, which helps me loose weight at a faster rate. Last time I did keto for 6 months I kept a spreadsheet, and it shows that when I ate lower fat on keto (traveling for work) that I tended to plateau. But that is my body.

Backstory - lost 56 lbs on keto pre-baby in 2017. Kept it off for 7 months. Pregnant/baby in 2018. Now trying to lose the baby weight - goal 39 lbs. PCOS. I find this thread to be very helpful - https://www.reddit.com/r/xxketo/

Good luck!

Don’t force yourself to eat, but maybe replace a current food with something higher in fat?

Also how is your weight loss? Are you happy with it? If so, then don’t worry about the specifics right now. I’d worry about them when you need to maintain.

^This as the PP keto poster. Follow what your body wants/needs.

You should eat just enough fat not to be hungry. If you can eat less fat than you are allowed (less than 75 percent), you will lose fat faster. Basically, your body will instead 'eat' adipose (fat) tissue instead of dietary fat. Which is what you want! Try eating less fat and see if you are still satiated. The whole point of eating enough fat is to make you feel full and stick to keto.

x1000.

Do not eat extra fat just to meet your fat macros. The only time you need to worry about meeting fats or your calories in general is if you have been consistently dieting for months and months on end, have lost a significant amount of weight, and your body needs a break from dieting.

Another caveat for that latter case is that you are already super lean. If you're still overweight/obese, then continue dieting, and no, you don't need to meet your fat macros.

Keto is Atkins, find a book in the library and do Atkins.

No, it's not. They are similar but there are important differences.

First, keto limits protein, and for a good reason. Atkins does not.

Second, Atkins limits carbs only in phase one. Ketogenic diet is about staying in ketosis indefinitely.

Definitely!

When you eat more protein than your body needs excess protein is largely converted into glucose. Thus, preventing ketosis and weightloss.

This is true of people doing a ketogenic diet for medical reasons. IRL, people don't do a ketogenic diet properly anyway.
