Trying Keto but I don't understand

Can someone recommend the best basic website for keto? I’m very overweight and need to lose a significant amount.

This is true of people doing a ketogenic diet for medical reasons. IRL, people don't do a ketogenic diet properly anyway.

Could you please explain, what exactly is true?

there are a million website, FB groups, etc. Do some research, and then download the Carb Manager app on your phone

It will ask you questions about your height/weight/etc and then give you your ideal macros to get into ketosis.

Then, enter some foods you eat normally. It will grade you A-F. I was shocked to see how much healthy food I was eating that came up to an F with a ton of carbs.

on keto, you focus on NET carbs. Basically Carbs - Fiber - Sugar alcohol (this one is more advanced).

So if your salad has 20 carbs, but 10 grams of fiber, that is actually only 10 NET CARBS. This is the # you focus on. To be in ketosis, I stay under 22g NET carbs a day

I use LoseIt app and it only shows total carbs but I just keep them under 50 g and stay in ketosis no problem.

I find Keto to be super confusing as well. Do you need to know your body fat percentage to do it accurately?

No, you don't. Ask away!

Ok yall. I'm OP. I'm so frustrated and annoyed with keto...

I've been on it 3 weeks now.

Gave up soda cold turkey (was drinking 3-4 diet cokes a day), all bread / rice / pasta, candy ... I ate like CRAP before.

I've been eating salads. with keto friendly ranch and lots of leafy greens and some bacon or chicken, hardboiled eggs and an avocado... I made a keto chicken divan casserole that was good... I did keto cauliflower fried rice, tacos/nachos, etc.

But I am EXHAUSTED and my joints hurt. I am so so so tired. And starving. And I maybe have lost a couple pounds of water weight but not more than 5 or 6...

There's literally no way my carbs are anywhere high. I went from a life of tons of crackers, chips, bread, cookies, cakes, sweats, soda, etc... to nothing. I'm annoyed. And tired.

In general, keto works better for weight loss for men than for women. Still, most men and women gain it all back when they go off of it.

You may not be eating enough. Have you been using My Fitness Pal or something similar?

...just like on any other diet

OP, usually when people don't feel well or don't lose weight on keto, it turns out they were doing something wrong.

I copied this from my favorite IG account low.carb.love - you may want to follow her.

I know I know... you don’t want to hear this but the truth is that if you’re not losing weight or possibly even gaining weight, there is a good chance you’re eating too much food or the wrong foods?. I also don’t believe all calories are created equal. The closer you stick to meats, veggies and healthy fats... the better results you will have ?
.
A calorie deficit will lead to weight loss, but cutting out starchy carbs and adding healthy fats and proteins will help eliminate cravings and help keep you satisfied throughout the day. Leading to an effortless calorie deficit. You don’t have to focus so much on calories while doing keto because your appetite is naturally suppressed once you’re in ketosis. So just aim to get there ASAP ?
.
A few reasons why you might not be losing weight or stalling
.
•Adding too much fat to your food or consuming to much fat throughout the day. Calories add up, especially if your going way overboard
•Too many nuts, cheese or heavy cream
•Too many keto/low carb baked goods, treats or even fat bombs
•Processed foods or hidden unhealthy ingredients (maltodextrin, dextrose, fructose, etc)
•Eating a trigger food and end up binging on the whole batch, bag or box (cookies, chips, etc)
•Stress is a huge contributor to weight loss stalls
•Eating the wrong types of fats/oils (canola, vegetable oil, etc ) dressings, mayo, dips...read your labels. Unhealthy fats cause inflammation and bloat.
•Not enough fiber (fiber helps you ?)
•Not enough protein. Protein keeps you satiated just as much as fat does if not more (IMO).
•Not getting enough exercise. Home workouts count ?. Building muscle and staying active is important, even if it means going for a power walk while listening to an informative podcast ?
.
There are some other factors like insulin resistance, thyroid, hormones, etc. (Fasting can help... look on YouTube)

I don't understand how to increase my fat without eating cheese.

I'm eating mostly veggies, a little meat, and some fat. I don't understand and I'm so sad and annoyed and fat and frustrated.

Cook your meats and veggies in butter, olive oil, avocado oil. That's how you add fat. Ceasar dressing is another (but check the label). Eat an avocado and eggs (cooked in butter or bacon grease) with your breakfast.

You may also need to add a potassium and magnesium supplement to make you feel better. It's unclear to me why you're still so tired if you're staying within your carb limits. If you're going in and out of ketosis, you may be suffering from keto flu over and over again.
