No one wants this stuff to be true. The fact that it has been happening is why people believed it. That and the fact that most reasonable people would not expect someone to stage something like this. So, I don't think there is any issue with the fact that she initially believed the reports.

We now know that things are not what they seemed. But, we don't know everything or why someone would allegedly do something like this. So, it is also reasonable to wait for more information. But, she didn't manufacture the story or participate in it. She had an opinion. So, what does she apologize for exactly? I guess she should just acknowledge there are good people on both sides of the story and move on.

She could have tweeted her first sentence, which was lovely and supportive. Jussie Smollett "is one of the kindest, most gentle human beings I know."

She could have left off her political gamesmanship - referring to "an attempted modern day lynching" - which depended on a completely uncritical acceptance of Smollett's allegation and which even from the beginning seemed a bit weird.

But it is impossible nowadays for someone to simply offer compassion or sympathy without also jumping in to either castigate the people who are supposed to be being taken behind the woodshed ("MAGA") or otherwise push their political agenda.

I am positive she could, even now, defend the first part of her tweet. Jussie Smollett can be kind, gentle, as well as horribly misguided, potentially racist, homophobic, classist, whatever you might think of him if he did perpetrate this racist, homophobic hoax.
She struggles with defending the second part, especially in combination with the legislation she used the situation to try to bolster.

His hatred of Trump drove him to plot and execute an unbelievable and malicious hoax and frame Trump, his supporters, and republicans for this crime. The crime was unbelievable and the details ridiculous.

He knew social media and democrat politicians would believe his lies without question and never thought his crime would accept be found out. He thought public outrage would protect him and he’d be a bigger star because of it.

That is actually an inaccurate statement, given the OpEd in the WaPo just days ago...........

The author actually said, "I need this story to be true." I am sure she is not alone.
