South China Post is reporting deaths have hit 80 (implying 24 on Sunday) and there are now 2506 cases in China.

Less than 5%

I take it that you are unfamiliar with Twitter or Weibo?

I am familiar but we really won't know how deadly this is until we see how the cases go that are here and in countries with western medicine. The hospital conditions in China are not that great. My niece is a pharmacist and studied there and said it's not unusual for there to be blood on the floor, dirty tattered blankets, etc. and that's without something like Wuhan.

I wouldn’t want to be far away from a hospital.

Excellent hospital 15 minutes away and an hour away from Brigham W&C. 1.5 hours from Mass General. Not isolated, just winter-quiet.

The cure rate seems pretty low, judging by the Lancet report. Even intubation etc don’t seem to help much.might be better to go out on your own terms, staring out at the sea rather than a grim hospital ward.

This is true of most of the world. I worked in public health in Latin America. A lot of bodily fluids, used needles, and soiled linen left around.

Just take whatever numbers China is given is and add some zeros

N95 mask

Sold out.

Are you guys really concerned enough about this to buy masks? I’m asking seriously. I haven’t been following this, but the death rate seems pretty low compared to other outbreaks.

I have some asthma and figure I can use them to clean up dusty areas, so why not?

Yep, it is kind of just in case. If you won't need them, hope and pray we won't, you can always use them
for clean up or painting or anything else. Or donate to the local hospital or another facillty like elder care or something?

Precisely. I just came back from Home Depot. Two boxes of 40 left on the shelf (the ones I got from Amazon have the valve). Bought one. There was a Chinese woman there taking photos of all the masks - probably shopping for some for family. That made me sad for her

My neighbor cancelled his trip but his wife and her parents are leaving Bejing tomorrow to come back - they plan to self-isolate at their beach home for at least two weeks. Low risk they are carrying it but I thought that was a very responsible thing for them to do. Of course the house sits on the water and is around 8000 square feet - not much of a hardship

If things start getting hairy here, I'm going to go up north to my own beach place - my son is at UMA and I'm anticipating a case or two there; we might see some colleges shut down for a bit as a precaution if it starts to spread. I'd go get him and go straight to the beach and isolate with him I guess. None of this should be necessary but I always have a plan B. Always.

Bunker down.

And Chinese high school students, blithely sightseeing the days away.

Give it up about the high school students. For every one of them there are dozens more who came from China on business or pleasure or escaped with means and you have no idea who they are.

The high school students should not be here. Period. We know who they are and we know they came from the infected province in China. I’m not sure why you’re having difficulty with these facts.

Clearly know nothing about China.

And you know nothing about sarcasm.

I think there is someone here who is very strangely trying to dismiss all of this like it’s nothing.

No, my DC was the one at GMU this morning (Sunday) and actually saw the CDC and Va Department of Health there in the Commonwealth Dorms. However, it has NOT been confirmed yet as coronavirus by the Va Department of Health and the person saying so is just pointing to a report issued by the Va Dept of Health that says that there are 3 unconfirmed cases in Va, two in Richmond, one in Nova. There could be others throughout the state that have evolved since that report was issued. I'm the one saying that her powers of deductive reasoning are flawed. Why create a panic among 34,000 students if the kid is just sick with a headcold? We will know soon enough.

I am reporting based on the email issued by Mason to staff, faculty, and students, and based on surveillance reports at VDH. http://www.vdh.virginia.gov/surveillance-and-investigation/novel-coronavirus/

This site will be updated on 1/27. There are no reports of a 4th case in VA as of 6:13 pm.

[/quote. To confirm .... the GMU case has NOT yet been confirmed as coronavirus. It takes 24 to 48 hours to get confirmation

right, I don't think any of the VA ones have been confirmed as of yet

Thanks for sharing. Will keep monitoring here. I’m sure someone will come down with it. Hope for all of us it doesn’t spread all over.

Seriously? They are responsible enough to self-isolate. As in, no one else around?

Let’s not trade barbs. The original reply seems strangely written though. Very strange. I mean very strange
