And Chinese high school students, blithely sightseeing the days away.

Give it up about the high school students. For every one of them there are dozens more who came from China on business or pleasure or escaped with means and you have no idea who they are.

If you see a large tour group just go the other way.

Avoid tourist hubs?

From the news it sounds like they are still in town. And moving in to another state to take in sites

Should have been cancelled. But if I were a parent I would be happy to get my kids out of town

Not going to happen.

Do you know how many flights came to the US from China today alone?

And it's already here.

I think there is someone here who is very strangely trying to dismiss all of this like it’s nothing.

No, my DC was the one at GMU this morning (Sunday) and actually saw the CDC and Va Department of Health there in the Commonwealth Dorms. However, it has NOT been confirmed yet as coronavirus by the Va Department of Health and the person saying so is just pointing to a report issued by the Va Dept of Health that says that there are 3 unconfirmed cases in Va, two in Richmond, one in Nova. There could be others throughout the state that have evolved since that report was issued. I'm the one saying that her powers of deductive reasoning are flawed. Why create a panic among 34,000 students if the kid is just sick with a headcold? We will know soon enough.

I am reporting based on the email issued by Mason to staff, faculty, and students, and based on surveillance reports at VDH. http://www.vdh.virginia.gov/surveillance-and-investigation/novel-coronavirus/

This site will be updated on 1/27. There are no reports of a 4th case in VA as of 6:13 pm.

[/quote. To confirm .... the GMU case has NOT yet been confirmed as coronavirus. It takes 24 to 48 hours to get confirmation

South China Post is reporting deaths have hit 80 (implying 24 on Sunday) and there are now 2506 cases in China.

Less than 5%

N95 mask

Sold out.

Are you guys really concerned enough about this to buy masks? I’m asking seriously. I haven’t been following this, but the death rate seems pretty low compared to other outbreaks.

I have some asthma and figure I can use them to clean up dusty areas, so why not?

Yep, it is kind of just in case. If you won't need them, hope and pray we won't, you can always use them
for clean up or painting or anything else. Or donate to the local hospital or another facillty like elder care or something?

Precisely. I just came back from Home Depot. Two boxes of 40 left on the shelf (the ones I got from Amazon have the valve). Bought one. There was a Chinese woman there taking photos of all the masks - probably shopping for some for family. That made me sad for her

My neighbor cancelled his trip but his wife and her parents are leaving Bejing tomorrow to come back - they plan to self-isolate at their beach home for at least two weeks. Low risk they are carrying it but I thought that was a very responsible thing for them to do. Of course the house sits on the water and is around 8000 square feet - not much of a hardship

If things start getting hairy here, I'm going to go up north to my own beach place - my son is at UMA and I'm anticipating a case or two there; we might see some colleges shut down for a bit as a precaution if it starts to spread. I'd go get him and go straight to the beach and isolate with him I guess. None of this should be necessary but I always have a plan B. Always.

I guess I am not really clear why being in a beach house is better than being in bethesda or Arlington or wherever? The invigorating sea air?

True that. CDC does NOT like the long incubation period at all. That made me a bit more uncomfortable.

I was going to visit my parents in Maricopa County, AZ in March. Going to wait until April or May now and avoid flights. Both are somewhat compromised and they don't need plane virus skank of ANY kind. If someone takes a turn for the worse, I'll drive out.

For my friends coming from Bejing, it's a place to isolate. For me? I'd rather be there then here any day of the week so it's one big FAT excuse

I wouldn’t want to be far away from a hospital.
