Malaysia Airlines Flight Goes Missing En Route to China

From the NYT:

"An Asia-based pilot of a Boeing 777-200, who asked not to be identified because he was not authorized to speak to reporters, said an ascent above the plane’s service limit of 43,100 feet, along with a depressurized cabin, could have rendered the passengers and crew unconscious, and could be a deliberate maneuver by a pilot or hijacker."

Where is the Long Island Medium when you need her?

my DH claims that the aircraft - or any aircraft, for that matter - could not have gone over any land mass without being picked up by radar, and, in fact, that most planes can be seen on radar over water, as well. If that is true, then it never went over land and something catastrophic happened at the point and moment when radar was lost. He thinks it was an act of terrorism that got botched.

Yeah, your DH is wrong.

How could the perpetrator(s) survive for more than a little while in that situation? I thought I read that those oxygen masks aren't good for very long after they're deployed. Unless they had their own equipment, I guess, or the whole thing was just botched.

Maybe of terrorist groups are claiming this because it was a failure.

It's fascinated the entire population apparently -- seems like it would still be pretty effective as an act of terrorism even if it failed. I think they would claim it. So it seems to me to be an accident.

And the reason your DH knows this is...?

Wouldn't someone in the Andaman Islands have noticed a 777 landing there?

There are 535 uninhabited islands, so if someone had cut a runway on one of them, no one would notice (if they covered it up along the way). And if a plane landed at night, no one might notice. It's jungle out there so they can hide the plane once landed.

Not saying that's what happened (I personally think they crashed in the ocean), but whatever happened has not happened before, and someone was piloting the plane, so it's not out of the question that someone landed the plane--as long as it was set up ahead of time.

No it's out of the question. That jet has to land at an airport, not something cut out of the jungle. It's not a small plane.

And - if it landed on a remote island, the plane must have almost been out of fuel - how in the heck would terrorists or hijackers get jet fuel to such a remote island location?

Meh- there's nothing keeping them from claiming it even if it were an accident.

If it is a botched terrorism attempt the responsible group will not claim it. They will wait until they are able to do it again (whatever "it" was that allowed them to get on board and overtake the plane) and be successful at it. THEN they wi claim both. They won't show their hand and give experts he chance to figure out what they did via questioning of other operatives who might be detained already.

"He divined that the Malaysia Airlines plane is either still in the air or has crashed into the sea."

Wow! He's good!

(Should we call Barb Mallon too?)

haha! At last he eliminated the possibility that it has crashed on dry land!

It's too bad Sylvia Brown died last year. I wonder if Montel has the hook-up for another psychic.

I can't believe the NYT printed this. So, is this supposed hijacker wearing a space suit? Did he hide it in his carry on luggage? How else would this hijacker survive in that altitude? If the cabin is depressurized, the temperature drops to what?? The hijacker would be frozen along with everyone else.

If it's true the plane ascended at some point, it's possible a malfunction in the autopilot did this? A struggle in the cockpit? Sabotage? An explosion?

Whatever happened, I'm betting it's malfunction + pilot error. My heart goes out to the families. Unbearable for them.

They're saying he was a suicide terrorist and that's how he killed himself and everyone else. More cowardly to die that way rather than crashing.
