Don't kid yourself, the majority of people here with UVA equities could care less. There are only a couple of people going back and forth and yes, the basher is usally the culprit. |
Sorry if someone already posted this, but Malcolm Gladwell’s podcast, from ‘21 about these ridiculous rankings is worth a listen. There’s a link in the article below. https://www.reed.edu/reed-magazine/articles/2021/rankings-gladwell-usnews.html |

I don’t get the people who spend lots of time trying to identify trolls & “XYZ College bashers” & triumphantly claim to be exposing them. First of all, you’re probably wrong most of the time. I can’t even count the number of times someone has accused me of being THE Tufts fan or THE Maryland basher or whatever. Or my anecdote just HAS to be the work of a troll because it doesn’t fit in with someone’s world view.
Second, even if you are right, so what? You get a prize or something? |
That is why they are called obnoxious and delusional (as to the importance & prestige of UVA). The ironic thing is, I would be glad to recognize UVA as one of the great public universities but the annoying/arrogant UVA boosters just can't let things be and must turn many threads into UVA threads and go on and on about how great UVA is compared to this school or that school. Pathetic bunch of people. |
DP: I'm pretty sure a parent isn't calling other kids "bottom dwellers" -- sounds like a HS troll. |
Florida is 28th? We're Florida residents (military) who assumed it would be an easy admit and cheap for years for our kids in 5-10 years. How depressing.
|
May not be an easy admit but you will have one of the top PUBLIC universities in the country surpassing UVA on the way and tuition will be relatively inexpensive compared to privates or OOS tuitions. |
Yeah, if you can get in. |
You sure are invested in this, weird. |
Florida takes mostly instate students and it is cheap for instate so no need to hit the panic button. I’d worry more about the damage DeSantis and Sasse are going to inflict to the university over the next few years. |

University of South Carolina
University of Vermont Elon All ranked lower than 125 |
It's an easy admit for FL residents because of the Bright Futures program. High ranking on USNWR rankings doesn't have much to do with academic standing, selectivity etc. The new metrics are more about research dollars (so size matters), Pell grant recipients (this is where FL shines--their bright futures program admits a lot of low-income kids and funds them). |
Totally agree. I find all this bickering about the rankings amusing. You all know nothing actually changed about these schools between last year and this year, right? But USNWR changes their formula and get all these people in a flutter about it. One of my kids is at a big school that went up in the rankings (according to the discussion here, I didn't look it up) and another is at a small school most people don't know. Both have excellent programs for the things they want. USNWR played zero role in where they applied or chose to go. |
The bottom line is that both UVA and William & Mary have as much if not more in common with privates than publics. That’s why William & Mary dropped as much as it did. That UVA managed to hold its own says a lot about the school. Even after a dramatic change in the rankings formula it is still in the top 25. It doesn’t matter whether it’s third, fifth, or tenth in the public school rankings. What matters is its overall position. That a few other public colleges are doing well also doesn’t diminish UVA. |
This particular thread could have gone forever. It's a fun and interesting topic. But the UVA people are nuts. They hijack everything. I don't live in VA. I don't care. But goodness, you UVA people are the most insecure, desperate, thirsty people I've ever encountered. You are not doing your school any favors. |
