2022 Olympics

There is no way KV is the only one being drugged. No effing way.

Disgusting what they have done to these young girls.

Right after the scores came up, Russian coaches and staff were consoling kamila Valieva and the 2nd place Trusova. Both were crying and then there was the Gold medalist, Anna Shcherbakova standing by herself without a smile. For a while nobody came to congratulate her because all the commotion were around the other two Russians. Trusova and Shcherbakova didn’t stand close to each other and looked like almost ignoring each other at the ceremony. Aren’t they training together in the same club for years? I understand the three Russian girls are rivals but I mean they are teammates right?

I have had doubts about Scherbakova being clean for a while now.

I’d take everything this guy says with a grain of salt, but I thought this was interesting. I definitely think this scandal has cast doubts on all the Russian skaters but it’s possible they’re not all being given the same things.

But, I am so sad that she alone is going to take the fall when this was a team effort.

Be sad for the Japanese skaters, who are being denied the placements and moments they deserve because of Russian drugging.

Blame the IOC for letting the farce of the ROC compete in the first place

Like what is the proper response now? Are they going to ban ALL Russians now, unless they go the route of competing for a different country with dual citizenship? I’m just wondering how this is going to turn out now? In the Olympics and other international competitions.

Seriously Russia, I guess you can hold your own competition and dope up your athletes as much as you want now.

LOL if you ban Russian skaters, they will all show up next Olympics representing places like Uzbekistan and Lithuania, where they will be welcome with open arms.

Also it comes down to $$$ of course. No one wants to host the Olympics anymore because it’s expensive, running billions of dollars above the estimated budget. Every game in the last 50 years has gone over budget and IOC receives fewer bids with each games. I read Russia was considering to submit its bid to host 2036 Summer Olympics. No wonder IOC is reluctant to punish Russia properly.
It’s disgusting but I think money is one of the top reason why things never change.

These scandals have to be taking a financial toll as well, though. Ratings are way down for this Olympics which will ultimately impact the amount of money any network (American and others) will be willing to pay for the exclusive rights to broadcast the games. Not sure when NBC's current contract expires, but it'll be interesting to see the terms of the next one.

The ratings are down because people rightly don’t want to support the communists and don’t want to watch an olympic broadcast that acts as if Chinese genocide against the Uighur people doesn’t exist. The US government and other free countries also executed a diplomatic boycott against the Chinese.
Scandals have always been been part of the Olympics but people watched. Once these are over and the games return to countries not committing genocide they’ll be great to watch again!

I doubt the average potential Olympic viewer knows or cares about genocide. Ratings are way down because 1) we're in a pandemic and the idea of even holding these games are silly, and you don't have the usual boost of spectators being excited about traveling and packing the stands, and 2) the primary audience is not watching live tv, especially NBC's pathetic broadcast coverage, and they're also not going to pay for yet another streaming service specifically to watch NBC's online coverage of the Games. Put the content on Hulu or another service as it airs, and NOT as a premium add-on, and ratings would be higher.

It was so sad to see the gold medalist alone and looking nervous instead of celebrating.

Personally, I think it’s unlikely, but given Russia’s antics year after year, no one is going to give them the benefit of the doubt. No one rational anyway.

This. I used to be an Olympics coverage junkie, although having kids has changed the time I have available for tv in general. But I can’t be bothered with the terrible evening broadcast, and I’m not paying for another service either. I watch highlights online.

The Tokyo ratings were way down last summer, too. I wouldn't underestimate the damage done by the IOC letting Russians compete as the ROC. It's a farce and makes a mockery of the Olympics. Now Valieva's positive test confirms everyone's worst feelings about it.

LOL! Vaileva couldn’t perform without the drugs?

I put NOTHING past the Russians.

In 1992, one of their gymnasts didn't make the all-around at first. Then they had a girl fake a knee injury to put the eventual gold medalist (Tatiana Gutsu) back into the competition.

Anonymous wrote:Serious question for those with more medical/figure skating expertise than me...why did the Russian figure skater even need to dope? She seems on a completely different level than the other skaters, plus the illegal medicine seems mild (compared to others on the list). Does it make that much of a difference?

There’s no way of knowing how she would be performing if she were clean. Maybe without the help of the heart meds, she would’ve burned out in practice months ago when the world wasn’t watching. That coach has figured out a highly successful system to train little girls and is figuring out just how to push the limits of what an 15-17 year old is capable of before their bodies mature into women.

I’d love to see what they were capable of of they were all clean, but I highly doubt any of her athletes are now.

Actually, most of these girls are burning out from injuries at a young age, probably because they are excessively training and doing all these quads. If the ability to train harder/longer is helped by doping, it’s really a double edged sword because the rest of their body can’t handle it.

As I sort of suspected would happen, the situation got to Valieva. Finished off the podium, which is probably for the best.

She was forced to botch her performance!

I'm not sure. All her entourage had to do was subtly withdraw their emotional support from Valieva (they are good at that as you can see from looking at past skaters that have performed poorly.) Leaving her alone to feel the brunt of the pressure (not cutting off her social media access for example) and letting her see the effect it's has on her family, and then as will happen with 15 yo's, the pressure takes them down. They have a successor waiting in the wings.

Or perhaps something to do with the positive test and the real story behind it? Out of all of them, I like Trusova would be the one to spill the beans on what has been going on in Eteri’s group, she actually left for a while so there’s a history.

She probably meant that Eteri knew she wouldn't get gold on jumps alone but kept feeding her with false hope.
