If they kept the SALT deduction to $10k and lowered the income limit for the CTC, my guess is the total cost of the bill is closer to Manchin’s affordability number. Why not compromise on that? I see Manchin’s counter offer says basically that.

Umm no it doesn't. Manchin's counter-offer is $1.8B for subsidized ACA, 10 years fully paid for national Pre-K, and Climate. It does not include CTC at all. That's the sticker. White House should have accepted.

Why the heck do they keep calling it a “tax credit” when there is NO work requirement? Manchin is right, it’s insane. And it’s NOT A TAX CREDIT!

I've been saying this all along. Call it what it is..... a bribe.

Not really. It's another welfare program like welfare, medicare, medicaid, WIC, etc. It's just that it is not needs-based. It's just a welfare program for people with children, whether they need it or not. At least the other welfare programs are need-based.

Medicare is need-based?

Its not welfare. Call it what is is - UBI for kids. The progressives thought they'd be cute and give it a misnomer to pass it.

Medicare is need-based?

The intent when it was created was that by the age of 65, everyone would be retired and need supplemental medical care to go along with supplement income (like Social Security). The original intent was needs-based. Now, many people work past the age of 65, but that was very rare when medicare was first passed.

They should have done a climate-only bill in the first place.

A clean bill without hundreds of billions in handouts to the rich?

Manchin’s back at the table on the subject. The question is, do the coal miners have enough clout to overcome however much Manchin’s billionaire funders are paying him?

Here is the off ramp

And it allows the CTC beyond the short extinsion, to be considered in the next reconciliation bill.

Boo hoo! We can’t raise taxes or fund the irs to the tune of billions to perform a proctology exam on the “wealthy” like we said on the campaign trail. Waaaaaa.

The government will have spent over $100 billion on the CTC this year alone. Another 6 months will mean a few billion more.
It's outrageous that a few billion amounts to a "rounding error." It is sickening.

No, the CTC needs to die a fast death. NO MORE ENTITLEMENTS!

For those still pretending Manchin’s opposition is about saving money.

The White House would have more credibility here if they quit trying to expand the SALT deduction, something that not many coal miners benefit from.

What Democrats are on the record saying they will refuse to pass it if SALT isn't raised?
Will Manchin, Sinema and Republicans vote for it if SALT is left alone and are they on the record saying they will?

A host of moderate Democrats — many from New York and New Jersey — have protested former President Donald Trump’s 2017 tax cuts for capping how much taxpayers in their states can deduct from their federal tax obligation.

Reps. Josh Gottheimer, Mikie Sherrill, Bill Pascrell of New Jersey and New York’s Thomas Suozzi say they won’t support any legislation that doesn’t restore the full deduction for state and local taxes, known as SALT.
