Real talk: are there going to be enough teachers for summer school?

Yes, many teachers were posting non-anonymously about how returning in-person to school is inappropriate from a pedagogical standpoint or whatever and acting like Hogan was a monster for wanting schools to open. This was a real thing teachers did. They also repeatedly argued that learning loss is exaggerated and that kids are resilient. Now you're concerned about the consequences of keeping kids out of school for over a year? NOW???? YOU USED OUR CHILDREN AS A BARGAINING CHIP. I'm sorry next year will be difficult but you made your bed.

Kids were not out of school for over a year. Education was happening even if child care wasn't.

Half-assed instruction that suffered the limitations of the DL platform was happening. So I supposed that means "meh" education took place.

OP here. I am kind of gobsmacked that we can’t have any other conversation here besides this one. We are grateful for and respect our kid’s teachers and their union. Take your crazy raving about all of that elsewhere; this thread is not for you.

I appreciate input from MCPS teachers and staff and from anyone else who has legit information about whether there is really likely to be summer school. Everyone else start your own thread.

Getting kids used to routines and procedures of being in school again who havent been in school for a year.

DP, but all the more reason most kids should have gone back this year, long before they did in this area (ours went back as soon as they could).

I don't blame teachers for not wanting to teach summer school this year. My kids aren't doing it, because they need a break. I realize we're lucky to have that as the best option.

There's going to be a LOT of fallout from being out of schools this long. It's incredibly short-sighted to think otherwise.

It’s just funny because prepandemic, DCUM could not stop talking about how soul-crushing and bad for the BMI it was to sit in classrooms all day. And now, it’s so important that we should have done it at the height of the pandemic.

Yes, it's hiLARious, isn't it?

Grow up. Kids don't need to sit at a desk for six hours to learn, and so many being out of school for so long has negative consequences. We should have prioritized kids. Period. Full stop.

You know that stupidly typing "period. Full stop" doesn't make you right and doesn't end the conversation, yes?

Y’all have spent the better part of the year trying to convince yourself & others that you’d die if you went into your classroom. That IS exhausting. And now- in the fall you’ll have kids who have been running wild since March 2020. That’s kind of how this works…. And why some of us wanted things to actually open this year.

Yeah, no. You know AREN'T running wild? Kids who have been adequately parented.

Good try though.

Out of curiosity, how much money is being offered to teachers who will teach summer school?

It’s less per hour than teachers regularly earn, but there’s a bonus if teachers commit before a certain date AND don’t take off any days of summer school. It’s going to be most attractive to teachers without young children who don’t have other options like tutoring, camp teacher, retail, or bar tending.

It sounds like not much summer school will be happening because the crappy DL platform burnt out the teacher population as well.

I'm sure that's taxing as well. It's largely soul crushing no matter where you do it from.

Like all good playground arguments, parents had nothing but nasty things to say about teachers.

Truth hurts sometimes. Teachers should admit they were wrong about the impact that DL had on students and that they dramatically overstated the covid risk in schools, especially for teachers who were even just partially vaccinated. Then we can all move forward together.

Teachers aren’t a monolith. You cannot group all teachers together. (And teachers don’t owe you sh*t by the way)

Cringe. You do. You are a public employee.
And yes- teachers (I am one) need to lie in the bed they made. DL was no problems- right?
Good luck with our kids in the fall!
And stop asking for more funding while you are at it. Establish a baseline of showing up to work, first

Cringe. So what? The public employee portion doesn’t require teachers apologize for something they had zero control over during a global pandemic. So nope. They don’t owe us a damn thing. Teachers showed up for work. I doubt you’re a teacher and if you are, you don’t sound like you’re fit for the job.

This is incorrect. It is our hourly salary rate (minus the usual 33% FICA, FED, and MD tax but with no other deductions) plus they add an extra $200 (33% removed again). Roughly 5 to 6 hours of work a day, but you are not allowed to have any days off during that time. So, it only really works for teachers that have no other commitments or childcare issues. Most staff prefer to focus on a mix of required training, taking state mandated grad classes to keep our teaching certificate, relaxing, home improvement, vacations, and childcare.

OK, then there are probably a lot of kids who haven't been "adequately parented," which gets us where?

Good luck!! I hope you will post along the way and let us know how it’s going. I cannot wait to get back to normal teaching in September! (Please note, students in my program don’t start until September, I’m not taking the first week off or anything.)

I am a paraeducator at an MCPS elementary school. Admin asked me three times to work summer school and I said no each time. I appreciate that they are trying hard to fill spots and that there are kids who truly need summer school, but after the last school year and a half of distance learning and hybrid learning, I need a break. My own kids will have my full attention this summer, and I'm also taking time to see family we haven't seen in a very long time. I tutored CARES students before school for much of the school year, and when we reopened I took on additional hours to help support students. Many of my colleagues also took on extra hours this year, and all of us put in countless hours of training time. It's time for a break and I know many others feel the same way.

There is a financial incentive for teachers for summer school but none for support staff, and as some have tried to say on this and other threads, the cost of childcare makes working summer school either a financial wash or a money losing experience for some of my fellow staff members. On top of that, school staff and teachers have spent the last year hearing both, "Teachers are essential workers!" and "Teachers are lazy freeloaders who should all be fired!" It's hard to take on summer work for little or no pay after a difficult year filled with hateful comments from many parents and community members.
