Alexandria residents - let's discuss the mayoral race. Silberberg vs. Wilson... and why?

Anonymous
I really wish another Democrat was running for mayor. I'm not enthused with either. However, I will vote for Wilson because Silberberg is god-awful. Listen to her answers-she has no solutions-just bashing Wilson. She wants wards for the city? More chances for corruption and council members working for their own neighborhood. She couldn't run a meeting to save her life and part of being mayor is knowing how to run and manage meetings-not 4 hour council meetings. Finally she was opposed to the waterfront development, which has turned out wonderful-I see more people downtown enjoying the restaurants.

I've lived here 25 years and while I don't always agree with Wilson, he answers email and tweets and is accessible. I hope another candidate will run for mayor next time. It's time for some new blood.

Insofar as action and real understanding - not words and studies.

I’d say anyone but silberberg. People are forgetting how disorganized and horrific she was. No true opinions of her own and no leadership. Watch an old council hearing

She was awful and so many 6-1 votes. When you can't get any council members to agree with you on anything, you're probably not the right person for mayor. Cities change and Alexandria will never be the sleepy little town of 1970-although then you wouldn't even go to Old Town unless you wanted to buy some drugs. Wilson has done some horrific things(the apartments going up on S Columbus for one) but at least he has some idea of how to run a city. I think it will be close.

If you think knowing how to run a city spurs a group of 3000 citizens to organize on the common goal of removing you, then you have a strange ide of what it takes to run a city. Name one public figure in the city that had even half that amount of opposition.

Hell, James Moran beat up a 10 year old kid in front of the berg and even that didn't produce the outrage that Wilson has.

Oh, please. That crazy Facebook group is not 3000 people organized with the purpose of removing the mayor from office. Half the people on that group (including me) are there for the entertainment value of watching the 30 or so active members froth at the mouth with their MAlxGA conspiracy theories. Many are there because they had interest in the Seminary Road project and never bothered to leave the group as it morphed into what it is now.

Say what you will about Wilson, he is super knowledgable about how government works - which was critical during the pandemic as he knew how to get what we needed from Richmond and knew how to move things quickly to allow small businesses flexibility to cope with social distancing requirements. She never could have pulled any of that off because she would not have known how. He is incredibly accessible to residents and communicates about the issues before council in monthly newsletters with a tremendous amount of detail and in responses to emails. calls, and social media responses. Alison was a complete disaster as mayor and she only won because the primary was a three way race that year. She didn't understand anything about how government works then and never bothered to learn while in office. She spent most of her time dithering about inconsequential things and voted no on pretty much everything that she now tries to take credit for as happening during her term - including voting no on funding for building desperately needed schools. I don't always agree with Wilson, but I appreciate how effectively and efficiently he runs things procedurally and that he has the intellectual capacity to reason through tough issues. Her, not so much. He gets my vote.

Totally agree! Also a member of the group, but would never vote for Allison, she was terrible. I will likely vote for Bill Rossello for council though, I think Wilson needs to have at least a couple members that aren't rubber stamps for "development at all costs" agenda.

Another member of that FB group, and I voted for Wilson. I do not love him, but against Silberberg he is definitely the more competent candidate.

Everyone should read the Ingerity Group's voter guide. It's eye opening. Wilson wouldn't answer several direct questions. Straight up disregarding citizen concerns. These are things people have been asking for over a year but he won't even address it.

That is not the way to Mayor.

Wilson and his DelRay woke constituents are dumping all the affordable housing in the West End to purify the area closest to Amazon in National Landing. Their property values will increase as they did the area if undesirables by transplanting them to the west end. Justin continued the same with Old Town

The bike lanes on Seminary Road are as useless as tits on bulls and the chicken slaughter house has already marked the west end as the city’s dumping ground.

To be far, Moran also beat up several women.

Oh stop it. I have lived here 43 years and am close with the owners. That is not what happened and Wilson did try to help. Please don’t spread lies about that family or restaurant for political reasons. The management of Bradlee killed Atlantis along with a number of other well loved small businesses.

Another PP here in the Integrity group who is voting for Wilson. I know a number of folks in the group who are doing so.

And agreed it is the same 20-30 whiners (and some horrible misogynists). If I were Wilson I wouldn’t want to answer questions to a closed of FB group that refuses to appreciate nuance and constantly throws around inaccurate information. Hell, I haven’t posted in that group in forever because of the behavior from certain posters. And I say that as one of the earlier folks who worked against the Seminary Road diet.

Honesty why are people so fixated on the mayoral race? It’s a ceremonial position with no authorities beyond any other council member. Meanwhile the council race is even worse and is at best the C team.

Because theres a development on every corner, the infrastructure is obsolete and the schools bursted at their seams 10 years ago. But the current mayor is saying " Come on in!!!"

Something has to give.
