Why won't people address the massage shootings as the mental health issue rather than racism?

This exactly. You never hear about mental health when the perpetrator is black or Muslim or Hispanic. Just white.

It’s complicated with Muslims given the connection to religious extremism prompting some crimes.

If we had mental health courts in every community with robust community-based treatment, then we could better address the root issue.

It’s too complicated to address Muslim people’s mental health issues when they commit murders because they’re also wrapped up in religion, but in this case it’s okay? Because he’s “Christian”? Because he’s white? Because most of the victims may have been sex workers? Because most of the victims were Asian? I don’t understand how you can dismiss mental health issues in one community but insist it be addressed here, even though he was motivated by religion.

+1

The PP who claims "it's complicated with muslims given the connection to religious extremism" needs to remove their head from the sand. Outrageous!

Wow, way to totally underscore the problem here. You don’t think there any crimes that are prompted by Christian extremism? Just Muslims?

So, was hitler just having a bad day, that simple counseling would have solved his mental issues? It wasn't anti-Semitism after all?

He most likely was a racist and mentally ill but frankly as an Asian American I find it deeply disturbing that the media is using this as an example to create division between white and asian people by primarily attributing the rise on asian hate crimes to white supremacy. The reality is Asian people have been attacked by both white and black people ..but no one publicly wants to address or even mention black on asian crime. How are we going to resolve this if we ignore reality.

Because the increased violence against Asian people was birthed by the last guy, a White guy and a white supremacist. Yes, Black people are committing some of the violence too, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t come from a person steeped in white supremacist culture.

When EVERYTHING is racism, nothing is racism.

Even law enforcement have said there is not indication that this was race-motivated. The shooter had frequented these places in the past.

“Even law enforcement.” Wow, a southern city’s law enforcement doesn’t want to admit this is racially motivated. Speaking of which, had you seen the t-shirts that same law enforcement officer had pictures of on his facebook page? I can’t type it here because it’s deletable. Let’s just say he blamed the coronavirus on China in the exact same manner as white supremacist Trump did, so DUH he doesn’t think murdered eight Asian people is racially motivated.

And AGAIN he reduced Asian people to a sex fetish. Then he murdered them. That’s racism, no matter how you cut it.

It's sad that you are so deeply concerned about the bolded that you would rather the media not tell the truth. Yes, the truth is that white supremacy is on the rise, and asian people along with all other minority groups will see increased attacks because of this.

Why should this realization(the rise of white supremacy) create a division between everyday white and asian people? Is the real problem that you are afraid that white people are unable to admit that white supremacy is a problem and thus blame the victims(asian women in this case)?

White supremacy must be stopped but we can't use it as an excuse to absolve or make excuses for POC who do these crimes. We can't continue to say everything is related back to white systemic racism. White person does it, then it's because he's a white supremacist. Black person does it, it's because he's a victim of a white supremacist culture. So now Asian and Black people must come together to fight this system? Agreed but that still doesn't solve the issue..

You don't get it. It's hypocritical. The liberal left has been putting Asian Americans against Black people forever by lumping us with white people almost refusing to count us as minorities. And now this rise on Asian crimes has been spun up to make it look like it's solely white people doing it when the reality is both white and black people are committing these crimes. Racist people on both sides. It's effed up. There I said it.

DP.

You seem to be the on equating everything to white supremacist. This current wave of violence is correlated to the rise of white supremacy.

Stay on topic. Can you forget about black people for one day in your life? Make that one morning.

I'm not sure what you referring to here. No mass murderer "gets a pass" because of mental illness. They all face at least a lifetime in prison.

Black people get killed even for the suspicion of a crime. White mass murderers get fast food on the way to jail. Black people suffer character assassination. White mass murderers get their faith, their family, their wonderful high school yearbook picture featured. Black people, even when innocent, get far harsher penalties. Indeed most of these White mass murderers get fairly gentle punishments.

I don’t know why we have to keep gentling people like you along. If you can’t see the disparities at this point, it’s because you’re actively looking away.

Did you miss the video of the white OK teen who was shot multiple times by multiple cops after he put down his gun and stood still with his hands up?

We can cherry pick incidents to support any side.

I’d rather make the bold statement that everyone needs to do better, and the first step is admitting that mental health plays a role in these senseless crimes.

Show us the numbers, side by side. Data make for stronger arguments than anecdotes.

So you are okay with the division as long as the division involves both black and white people united against Asians? Just want to be clear.

Are all you people who are insisting that this wasn't racist also of the mindset that the murderer couldn't be racist because he thought that Asian women were sexy? That's just gross, you realize. He turned Asian women into the objects of fetishization. Like those disgusting white men who take sexual tours in SE Asia. That is racism.

Some people want to believe that racism is merely saying that you hate a certain color of people or using the "n" word. They will not accept that racism is complex and woven into the structures of society and culture.

I also wonder how the Cherokee PD "interviewed" the murderer about his racial motivations. You know, the same PD where the spokesperson they hired and kept on staff sold t-shirts about the Chy-na virus. The murderer probably said something like he thought the Asian ladies were beautiful, and therefore he wasn't racist. And that was enough.

What is it when young white men target an ethnic group for mass killings? I’d say it’s beyond simple racism. But certainly a racist worldview informs the thought processes of these people. Dollars to donuts this guy was probably fixated on Dr. Seuss last week.

Mental health is not an excuse. The guy was sane enough. Sick but sane.

The bigger problem we refuse to talk about is gun culture.

No, it's not.
These are not white supremacists.
