Why won't people address the massage shootings as the mental health issue rather than racism?

His name is Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa. Doubt he's a white supremacist.

Middle easterners are considered caucasians.

And how many white supremacists think that? What do you think those white supremacists want to do with a guy like this and everyone else with a similar name?

Middle easterners can be white supremacists. Jason Reza Jorjani. He’s in the same league with Spencer and his friends.

"Can be" and "often are" are two different things. The leader of the Proud Boys is black.

White on white crime can’t be racial.

If race really is a social construct then a racial crime is whatever you say is a racial crime. Otherwise you are saying racial differences are real, which is often considered racist.

For many, it is a social construct when it is convenient (alleged police profiling) and real when it is convenient (higher impact of disease among blacks).

Whatever it is, there are mentally challenged people in every community. And every community has grocery stores. The CO grocery store could have been any grocery store anywhere in the US. So, stop feeding these people with victim blaming and victim shaming.

Or - more effectively - let's regulate guns a little more tightly so a schizo young man can't buy an offensive military-grade weapon and mow down innocent people only 6 days later

Mandatory 30-day waiting periods, training, licensing, mental health evaluations, and family-enabled red flag warnings would've saved the lives of 10 people.

But instead you suggest a farcical remedy - "[stop] victim blaming and victim shaming" - that does bupkis for innocent people.

What's an offensive military-grade weapon? Answer: something civilians cannot legally buy.

Here's a shocker for you: citizens can purchase fully-automatic weapons:

Was the CO gun or rifle legally purchased? They are still investigation. Only law abiding people will follow the law. Criminals have their own ways.

How do you think they discovered he purchased it only 6 days before the shooting?

The changes I described would've tangibly saved lives. A 30-day waiting & cool down period? 10 people alive RIGHT NOW.

It’s the nutjobs like you that’s feeding these delusional people.

Paranoid schizhophrenic shoots 10 people. PP thinks maybe he shouldn't have been allowed to buy a gun. But PP is the nutjob.

I guess all criminal cool down during the 30 days. No criminals would wait out the 30 days.

We are way overdue for common sense gun control. How long ago was Sandy Hook? Twenty first graders were shredded to bits and we didn't do anything.

https://www.bradyunited.org/legislation

enhance & expand background checks (close charleston loophole)
extreme risk protection orders
safe firearm storage
crack down on dealers
gun violence research

And these are just the BASICS.

If the guy is a paranoid schizhophrenic, he isn't like your average criminal at all. He's crazy. Crazy people can use a cooling down period. Definitely. I have mental illness in my family. They almost did some horrible things. They got caught before they did it and yeah, we made them cool down for a bit.

Also better mental health care for children and young adults. The Sandy Hook murderer had serious mental health issues that were left untreated.

Hey, are any of the right-wingers proposing bills to expand mental health care?

Thoughts and prayers are about as cliche as calls for more gun control.

Agreed. Schizophrenics have trouble sticking to day-to-day life routines. Planning isn't their strength.

This is easier said than done. There will always be people in varying levels of mental distress and not always treated. I'm all for expanding mental health care and access, but look at the recent cases. They probably did have access to care if someone mobilized it. They didn't. And it's not just about access. Psychiatric care is extremely complicated, treatments and medications don't always work, the side effects can be hard to tolerate, some drugs can in rare circumstances cause homicidal ideation, cost, insurance won't cover hospitalizations long enough to be effective, etc.

Quite frankly, talking about mental health care is a huge distraction from the #1 cause of these shootings. Unfettered access to guns. This absolutely has to be dealt with. Depression and psychosis aren't going away, no matter how good our mental health care is (and it's bad). And neither are shootings unless we have some common sense gun laws to delay access, require licensing, registration, etc.

Tell me about it. Everyone in my family has mental health issues. I know how complicated it is, and also how it important it is in ways you definitely have never considered. Thanks for lecturing me about my life and how unimportant my concerns are compared to yours and even explaining to me the issues I have faced all my life and why nothing can be done about them while common sense gun legislation doesn't happen either.

Sorry to distract you from your important urgent agenda that hasn't advanced in decades with a two sentence post.

Sorry, no offense! We're talking about shootings. In a conversation about the need for better mental health care, I'll be right there with you. I have a lot of experience with the issues too. I am simply saying that when trying to stop these shootings, it's easy for gun nuts to deflect and say we need better mental health care (and then do nothing to advocate for it) to prevent any changes to gun laws. I'm all for the best mental health care and treatments we can possibly have. But even then, if we don't have better gun safety and access laws, we still haven't solved the problem. And not all shooters have diagnosable mental health problems. Which is why I separate these two issues. But by all means we need both better mental health access and treatment and common sense gun laws. I misspoke when I said it's a distraction, and I wasn't trying to trounce on your comment. What I should have said is that we shouldn't let talking about mental health distract us from also addressing gun access. A lot of people don't know how complicated mental health is, and it's not enough to improve the system.

Yet, another mass shooting, this time in SoCal, in the city of Orange. four people killed this evening.

Non-suicide gun deaths still have an insignificant death rate compared to other causes, but the press keeps it in our faces due to its shock value. Fast food and other restaurants kill more people by far in the U.S. every day. Heart disease, stroke, etc. It is less violent but pumping fat and sugar into our bodies is a much more dire and likely cause of death. So if you really care about saving lives, then fight that industry not the insignificant gun lobby. But, we know, you just care about your hot button issue and being right vs. saving lives.
