You look at the evidence. For example, the Korean murderer of 32 students at Virginia Tech in 2007 gave no evidence that the killings were motivated by racism, but there was certainly evidence that he was mentally ill.

It’s complicated with Muslims given the connection to religious extremism prompting some crimes.

If we had mental health courts in every community with robust community-based treatment, then we could better address the root issue.

Waiting periods plus a medical evaluation and perhaps family consultations would serve society well.

How do you know this? Are you an investigator on the case?

And how come white men are always mentally ill and it's tragic and sad because their beautiful white life is going to be marred?

Why don't we focus on the fact that it's too easy to get guns and this sort of thing is going to continue to happen because we have a seriously dysfunctional relationship with guns in this country.

And get real. The Democrats keep trying to address access to mental health services; the GOP keep shutting them down. The Democrats continuously point out ways in which GOP policies are harmful to the mental health of various groups and the GOP gives fck all care about it.

It’s not really the mental health problems - millions of people suffer from mental health problems. It’s a gun problem.

If it was mental illness, then why don't we have similar mass shootings with mentally ill black/hispanic/asian gunmen killing large groups of white people?

Instead, it's a white guy aiming at a group of:
-Black parishoners at their Bible study (Dylan Roof)
-Hispanic/Latino families shopping at Wal-Mart (Patrick Crusis)
-Asian massage parlor workers (Robert Long)

Most mass shooters aim indiscriminately - Las Vegas shooting, Columbine, etc.

But in cases where all the victims are of predominantly one ethnic group and the shooter is of a different ethnicity, you need to first look at ethnic/racial hatred. There's not much of another explanation.

Further, if it was due to mental illness, we should see mass shooters of other races/ethnicities. We know mental illness is prevalent in those populations too. But we don't!

I think the jihadi terrorism we’ve endured over the last two decades both domestically and abroad is universally linked to religious extremism. I would hope that mental illness also plays a role. Otherwise, it’s rather terrifying if mentally stable people can get on board with terrorism.

Nonetheless, I’m all for exploring whether mental health plays a role in violent crime. No-brainer imho.

In 2007, the worst mass shooting to date was the Virginia Tech shootings by Seung-Hui Cho, a US resident of South Korean heritage.

But this number was surpassed in 2016 by the Pulse nightclub murders, by Omar Mateen, of Afghani heritage.

Mental illness affects all races.

All races have bias. Anyone can say or do racist things.

Mass shootings are a tiny subset of gun violence.

Black communities are disproportionately impacted by gun violence.

Mental illness often plays a role in gun violence. Childhood trauma and poverty often play a role and can impact overall mental health and behavioral issues such as impulse control.

We must tease through all of these complex issues on a case by case basis. Sweeping generalizations lead to unhelpful labels, not solutions.
