Why won't people address the massage shootings as the mental health issue rather than racism?

Anonymous
The guy was clearly crazy and paranoid about massage (sex) shops. The world has been in lock down for a year. People with serious mental health issues have not been able to get services and have been festering. Why must everything be about racism. We should be talking about what to do with seriously mentally ill people who refuse to get help or take medications.

I don't know if he were paranoid. I do think it was not racism. There are far more Asian restaurants and nail salons than massage parlors.

Interesting, though, that these massage parlors are being discussed quite differently than the one that the owner of the Patriots visited.

That said, this is a terrible tragedy and the perp should be put away for a very, very long time without parole.

As a society we are totally clueless about mental health in terms of prevalence and impact and that was before COVID.

Because media wants to sensationalize everything for ratings.

It was clearly racism....why only asian massage parlors? It's not like there aren't all sort of them all over. The sheriff, who is an Erik Prince trained racist himself, didn't help anyone here either.

Are there other types of massage parlors that wink-and-nod elude to being places with prostitution services being offered? And, it’s also conceivable that there simply ARE no other types of massage places in that area. Both these are legitimate points.

Because he frequented them.

Because OP you need the emotions that arise from accusing people of racism to get anything done in this country if you're a liberal.

Nobody cares about mental health.

I don't know. Maybe because every time a black person does something when they are clearly suffering from mental health issues, they just get portrayed as criminals when they are clearly suffering from mental health issues. No one cares about them. I don't care about him.

Because he frequented them.

Did he also frequent the ones in Florida he was planning to attack?

I lived in the South for a few years. Asian massage parlors that gave more than just a massage were a thing and they were easy to spot. People wanted police to close them down but it never happened. I always assumed they paid good bribes.

It’s more than that.

There’s an effort on the part of advocates to prevent us from mentioning mental health when discussing gun violence or other violent crime so as not to stigmatize the majority who suffer with mental health issues who are not violent (and often are victimized by violence). I get it, but it’s a disservice to society to ignore the obvious mental health issues.

Additionally, there’s a rabidly aggressive group of people who think mentioning mental health issues equates to defending and excusing the criminal act. It obviously does not, yet these people control the media response through their social media posse that labels anyone who raises mental illness as an apologist for the criminal.

Go read the threads on the SF and GA attacks over in Off Topic.

We will never be able to prevent or address the problem if we don’t discuss the mental health issues.

I don’t think discussing mental health equates to caring about or defending the gunman.

I do think connecting the dots here bolsters advocacy for tighter gun laws tied to mental health.

This exactly. You never hear about mental health when the perpetrator is black or Muslim or Hispanic. Just white.

Why are you so quick to downplay racism?

It’s as if you don’t think racism is a real thing. Weirdo.
