Seems like a majority are thriving given the great test scores. McLean parents wouldn't settle for less.

There's bound to be kids/parents who don't do well and don't adjust well whether the school is in McLean, Great Falls, Vienna, Oakton, or wherever.

I just have to say that there is some person on this blog that repeatedly until their dying breath supports KGES as if they are in real estate or have something to lose. They will spare no insult to any of us who have a different opinion. I've got some exceedingly bright children and some normal kids and I've had issues with each and every one within public schools and specifically at KGES. The more I talk about it, the more I find other parents with similar situations. It seems to me that you need a wakeup call instead of belittling parents/students.

If you're searching for utopia, hopefully you'll find it after you die.

Most of us realize that there's no such thing as perfection, so we'll continue to persevere and thrive, regardless.

If you've got better ideas or a better approach, consider opening up your own school. And if you do, I'm sure there will be parents who will have issues with your methodology too.

Hopefully your kids won't turn out as bitter as you are.

Good luck to you and your endeavors.

Did you stay in the public schools? If so, how did you feel about Longfellow MS and McLean HS?

In general terms, parents and students have more say in Middle School and High School. You can take the most challenging classes and it is your choice. If a student doesn't like a teacher, they can have a conversation and normally they can change teachers if they have legitimate concerns. Additionally, kids have a different teacher for each period so it isn't the same teacher all year long, all day long. For some reason the grading seems different too. In elementary school, it is as if they intentionally grade low and then ramp up over the year. Overall, if you look at the picture the elementary school painted of my oldest child and compare it to the reality of her graduation diploma, the two measurements bear little resemblance. She didn’t have any dramatic transformation to explain the difference. It was the same good, bright kid all along. I am particularly concerned with elementary school because parents don’t appear to have any say in how much they want their child challenged or who is a good teacher-match for their child. We don’t get to see what parents before us have to say about particular teachers and we have to accept teachers who aren’t as good as other teachers. I just think we have one chance to do it right and we should makes sure we do it right, especially when they are so young and trusting of adults.

I'm happy to have finished crunching the numbers. I believe your statement is flawed. Check out the latest stats

KGES is the lowest performing schools in McLean and has been for some time. In fact, it is one of the lowest peforming schools in all of Northern VA. Why would you think that a parent who has done the research to prove the facts has an ax to grind or is obsessed? She wants parents to know that their attention should be on improving the school and not raising money for programs that are not helping the children learn what they need to learn to reach their fullest academic potential.

The school brings in $350K in PTA funds, probably the largest PTA budget of all McLean schools............being rich does not cover up being dumb. Whose fault is this? The Principal has known all along that the peformance of the students aren't up to snuff, but there has been no significant changes to improve the performance of the students. There has been no changes in how the budget is spent to help the kids close the gap. McLean parents should smarten up and make sure their PTA money is being spent where it makes the most impact in the education of their children. If they had known the facts earlier, they might have responded earlier.

This is long over due. KGES needs an Egyptian-style revolution.

It was either the captions on your blog, or the color coding of the charts, or both.

I think she bases it on the fact that KGES was #84 on a list of composite SOL scores for 100 NoVa schools, lower than any other McLean ES. There are more than 100 ES in NoVa, however, and other schools weren't included on the list.

Some school has to have the lowest score in McLean on a standardized test. KGES is never at the top, but isn't always at the bottom, either.

Thank you for explaining that to me. I couldn't fathom how anyone would state that Kent Gardens is one of the lowest performing schools in all of NoVA. As you point out, there are far more than 100 elementary schools, as there are 139 ES in Fairfax, 52 ES in Loudoun, 21 ES in Arlington, 13 ES in Alexandria, and even more in Falls Church City, Manassas Park, etc.

Oh noes, Kent Gardens has 3% FRL students!

I don't think that has anything to do with whatever complaints people have or don't have with KGES.

You can't be suggesting the KGES has the highest amount of Free Reduced Lunch (FRl) students can you? Or, that this has any bearing on the fact the school has the lowest SOL scores of all McLean schools and scores #84 in all 100 NOVA schools? KGES isn't a Title 1 school and many of them do better than this school. The principal is taking advantage of the rich McLean parents and FCPS is allowing it to happen. The principal is not part of the community. She doesn't care about the students. If she does care, she cares the minimal amount. Most of it is covering her butt and collecting her 6 figure salary and laughing all the way to the bank. It is a shame.
