Child free women trying to co-opt Mother’s Day

I know several women who are child free by choice and spend the other 364 days of the year railing against children and families and going on about how it’s better to be child free. Then Mother’s Day comes around and they’re all over social media wishing themselves a happy Mother’s Day because they are “dog moms.” Just stoppppp.

I have three your children (all under 4) and this does not bother me in the slightest. Why is this even something that you notice? Enjoy the day with your kids and get off facebook.

There's an easy solution if this bothers you. Ignore and get off social media.

How does this diminish your Mother’s Day?

I feel like this will be inflammatory but this is the equivalent of all lives matter to moms. Its a day for moms, thats what its called. So when everyone under the sun can define themselves as a mom, then it really isn't celebrating 'moms' but more like, 'women' or 'anyone with a vaguely maternal instinct or who has a relationship with a child or animal.'

I can deal with the people who think mother's day is stupid and pointless and hallmark-y. Fine. Whatever. But OP is right, if you have no children and want no children then you should not be celebrated on mother's day. Just like Chinese people shouldn't be celebrated during black history month and straight women shouldn't be celebrated during pride week.

If you're going to name something specific, then it loses all meaning when anyone can define themselves as that specific thing.

I have kid and a dog. Honestly, right now I prefer the dog and the card she "made" me yesterday. She is always so happy to see me and we never get sick of each other.

Like what?

I want everyone to work towards improving the lot of mothers in society - maternity leave, flex schedule, areas in office to pump or nurse, onsite daycare, free prenatal care etc.

After that everyone can pamper themselves and congratulate themselves to being moms of humans, animals and rocks. I am not going to take offence to that.

Well, I get upset when every person in the world wishes me a Happy Mother's Day (restaurants, grocery stores, Dunkin Donuts, wherever I am that weekend) BECAUSE I'm not a mother.

I WANTED to be a mother, but could not. So the wishes actually hurt a teeny bit (less every year, but still)

But you know what? I can't stop others from just saying "Happy Mother's Day" to every woman in the world. So I work on my reaction - and I tend not to go to restaurants alone with my husband on Mother's Day weekend.

Maybe consider giving your kid up for adoption?

Some people shouldn't have become parents. It's not too late. I bet you could still find a nice family who would want them.

“Ewww”? Are you 12?

“Dog mom?” Are YOU 12???

Sometimes, I wonder about the emotional maturity of people who are this obsessed with their animals.

I wonder the very same about people who are obsessed with their children.

The Scranton Times has a very popular Mother's Day edition every year. It's been going on for 50 years or more. They just added a "Maws and Paws" section for women and their "furbabies". It was hilarious to see some of these kooks. The times just sees it as additional $$ coming in.

I was talking to her and asking how she managed to keep everything straight between so many different animals with different surgeries and different illnesses.

"It's not that bad. There just isn't as much on the line. People might think that their dogs are their kids, but they are not, actually, their kids."

Being a dog mom is great, but it isn't the same and everyone knows it. Don't worry about it, OP.

This is awesome.

No it's not. I would hope the vet I am trusting to take care of my animals isn't treating their lives as if they don't matter. And for their own sake they'd better not, too, since more and more states are allowing damages beyond economic value in veterinary negligence cases.

And to the "real" moms who are irritated at the child free women who you are pissed at for coopting your day: we only do it to annoy you. So just ignore or else you're playing right into our dastardly scheme.

Oh, please -- everyone acts as though a dog is their child until the vet bill comes. Veterinarians are vastly underpaid relative to the amount of rigorous training they have, and yet, people balk when they receive a $2,000 vet bill for surgery, chemo, etc. Can you imagine receiving a $2,000 bill from your human doctor for chemo?

By the fact that you quoted the post about miscarriages, I'm assuming that means you don't believe women who have lost their children during pregnancy to be mothers? What about women whose children died later in life-- as infants, toddlers, children, young adults, and so on? Are they no longer mothers?
