I hate neurotypicals!! They don't know how to follow a routine, insist on talking in codes rather than just saying what they mean, insist on variety just for the sake of it, and don't let me stim when that's a key way for me to emotionally regulate., etc. etc. That would be a really awful thing to say, right?

Don't use hate when it comes to your kids. Should be an easy rule.

This is horrible and frankly, PP, you are horrible for saying it.

If I have a child with cancer, am I not allowed to say that I hate cancer? Cancer is NOT my child, nor my child's identity.
They are not comparable. Cancer is a disease. Autism is not. Autism is not something that needs to be cured.

Autism is a disorder that must be managed. It can't be cured, unfortunately.
Autism in NOT a disorder!!

So my kid has a psychiatrist, a psychologist, a speech therapist and an IEP for nothing? Good to know.
They need them to be able to interpret and communicate with the neurotypical world. Just as neurotypicals would need them if the autistic brain were the norm.

DP. It's a disorder. Sometimes debilitating, sometimes not.

A disorder is something that negatively affects your functioning or well being. That clearly describes my kid. What would happen in some other non-existent world where human brains were designed differently is unknown and irrelevant.

Not acknowledging a disorder as such is just another kind of ableism. Mental disorders have a stigma, no doubt about it. But instead of trying to make a world that works for all people with mental disorders, you say, "At least my kid isn't one of THOSE people."

Yes it is, it's a neurological and developmental disorder.

+1. I hate autism and mourn the person my child could have been (not OP, BTW, but my child has similar issues--demand-avoidant behaviors).

Of course it is. And a particularly cruel one that I wouldn't wish on any child or family.

To the autism isn’t a disorder poster—were you the same as a mother who did a guest spot on a local radio show and had a friend call in to say, autism isn’t a disorder? Of course it is, otherwise you wouldn’t need to homeschool your kids. Just buzz off.

Autism is a disorder. OP's child has never been diagnosed with autism and after what seems like many years of intervention, one person mentioned autism. Latching on to that as a reason for everything wrong in their life is a bit absurd under these circumstances. Maybe after testing, they will get a diagnosis. But, maybe they will find out it is one of those diagnoses they also don't want, like ODD.

Anyway, onto my point. PP, your child never could have been something else. Autism is part of your child's very being. It isn't like your child went through some traumatic experience that robbed your child of being the person they could have been. Your child is the person they were meant to be. What you are mourning is what you hoped for when you decided to have a child.

Oh, F off. The op isn’t mourning. She’s desperately seeking help. Kids with autism can go their whole lives without being diagnosed. We are in strange times.

Autism is becoming the one size fits all diagnosis like ADHD used to be. Pretty crazy when you consider it was once limited to severe disability

There is no biological or neurological mechanism ever found or demonstrated for the loose grab bag of symptoms we label as “autism”. It’s a way of classifying an ever changing list of symptoms, not any kind of defined neurological disorder.

When ASD and ADHD are combined into one umbrella diagnosis, it will be extremely upsetting

No doubt PP was quite despondent when they stopped classifying schizhophrenia into subtypes.

Autism is awful for our family. I wish there had been a screening test. I bet one day there will be.

In my parents' group, all the kids have autism but two. My CI child is completely different to deal with in the day to day, although the IQs are in the same range. Meltdowns and behaviors are the big separator.

It is a tough disorder to manage. I hope OP can get the help she needs soon.

I hope there is a screener test for neurotypicalism. It would be to be able to cull out the freaks who do things like stare at each others eyes when speaking. No other animal species used that menacing habit. They seem violent and abusive. They are so rigid they ostracize each other for everything from dressing differently to having different skin color. They don't seem to do well thinking outside the box. The few inventions they have come up with on their own have done little to improve society or the world as a whole. They don't seem to like themselves very much. They're always blabbering on about meaningless nonsense with each other and have a difficult time just being with their own thoughts. They constantly look to each other for approval for everything from who they're friends with to how they live their lives. Its like they are afraid of each other. They just cause constant misery. I mourn what the world would have been like with out them
