Continued economic freefall = growing desperation (for some) = more crimes of desperation, some of which will be violent.

Continued free fall for how long? I’m waiting to turn my house into an armory until this has been going on a year or more and/or the social safety net has evaporated.

Stop trying to make this into NRA talking points.

PP here ... I'm not an NRA troll. I believe background checks, red flag laws and other forms of reasonable gun control make sense. There's a great big difference between the NRA view of "any gun safety law is a slippery slope toward loss of 2A freedoms" and the view I think I'm hearing from you, which is "Any preparation for self defense with a firearm is an unacceptable concession to Red State America."

I stand in the great gulf between those two world views.

That’s not normal

I think it is. You would be never know unless we went to the range together. Otherwise I’m just another white collar professional living in a big suburban home in a nice neighborhood. But stigmatize all you want, it’s a good look for you.

Im stigmatizing and it’s a great look for anyone. Nobody needs a dozen firearms.

Maybe you don’t realize different guns have different purposes. A shotgun, rifle, and handgun aren’t all that interchangeable. There are also different ones used in different types of hunting or sporting activities.

So by your own admission you need 1 shotgun, 1 rifle and 1 handgun. Three guns. Buy one that meets most needs in each category.

But keep acting like an ahole on DCUM... that’ll really fix the reputation of gun nuts!
Fortunately, given your ignorance in the matter, you don’t get to decide what or how many another person “needs.”

Telling other people what they do and do not "need" = YOU are the ahole

We actually support the same things then. You’re not hearing from me that I want to ban guns entirely.

What I do want to stop is NRA pp and preppers whipping up the threat of violence and causing needless anxiety. See the other thread in this forum.

And I want to stop NRA pp from using this fabricated threat of violence for NRA talking points. She’s making up stats about how all the gun sales are to new owners who are scared about all the alleged violence. And denies, based on zeros and evidence, that it’s mostly lots of preppers and NRA members stocking up.

When this happens, if it ever does, it might—might—make sense to buy a gun. But it’s extremely unlikely to happen, in fact police are reporting that violence is down.

Until it happens, you’re just whipping up anxiety to try to boost gun ownership and NRA membership.

Crime is actually down, except for domestic violence, and a gun is unlikely to help if both members of the couple already know about it. https://www.usnews.com/news/national-news/articles/2020-03-30/coronavirus-quarantines-spark-drop-in-crime-for-now

Most analysts think this will be over by May or June and then most workers will go back to work. Unemployment insurance is there until then, and for those who don’t get their jobs back. We’re supposed to be in the peak two weeks now.

Did we have a Mad Max situation during the 2008-2009 Great Recession, when there was also high unemployment? No.

You’re preying on people’s anxieties to stir up fear and gun ownership. Pat yourself on the back.

How many pairs of shoes do you own? How many pots? How many pans? How many outfits?

Why do you “need” all of that stuff?

Back to OP question: are any gun shops still open in DC? (and is there any stock left?)

Hoarding guns for an imagined apocalypse is a much different mindset than buying several pairs of running shoes or heels.

Of course they’re allowed. But you can’t normalize this behavior by comparing it to collecting shoes or stamps.

What is the difference? beyond hoplophobia.

Your premise that collecting guns is "not normal"... is not normal. And also false.
