That is true, but Biden is in favor of doing nothing at all, which only lets the problem grow bigger and bigger.

Biden was apart of the administration with the most effective deportation system. The laws that govern deportation work as is but can be improved (ie allowing families to be held together for much longer, ensuring that families are deported together not separately, deported straight from the courtroom or as soon as the deportation is ordered, law enforcement goes to their last known address to deport) so that people dont languish for years after being ordered deported .

There can be improvements to other areas of immigration but Presodent Obama's administration did well in this area.

I agree.

The neo-liberals want to throw out the baby with the bathwater. We never learn from past efforts . . .

The problem we have now is the problem Obama and Biden created.

They promised to prioritize immigration reform, and didn't deliver.

They approved a joke of an executive order, which Trump reversed with a simple signature.

Meanwhile, they separated millions of families while NOT solving the problem.

Kicking the can forward and making it bigger is "doing well"?

I'm afraind you have no idea what you are talking about.

FALSE. Under Obama, the house republicans blocked immigration reform. try again. https://www.politifact.com/punditfact/statements/2018/jan/26/ronald-brownstein/did-senators-pass-immigration-reform-bills-2006-20/

Oh come on.

Obama had EIGHT years to negotiate a compromise. To offer A in exchange of B. And to fix the mess.

He didn't. He only made the bad worse. In ways crueler than Trump. But the media gave him a free pass because why oh why?

I absolutely think that promoting illegal immigration is incredibly cruel. You're encouraging people to put their lives, and their kids' lives at risk so that they can come work for crap wages and in miserable working conditions. You want to promise them a free education and free health insurance and free meals, but really, you just want companies to be able to access cheap labor so that your stock prices continue to rise and your portfolio grows.

THAT is cruel. And inhumane.

You should watch the debates.

Many dems are on record for free healthcare for illegal immigrants
Many dems are on record blocking ICE from doing their job of deporting illegal immigrants
Many dems are on record for in-state tuition for illegal immigrants

That's all you really need to know

these people are here illegally they don't belong here they should be removed and not be receiving any kind of benefits or assistance

For the border itself too many people claim asylum and then never show up to any processing or hearings, having them wait outside the U.S. until their hearing date makes total sense

Let's implement a skilled immigration system like Canada

Then you will agree that DACA was a cruel and inhumane joke.

It promoted the illusion of protection and helped promote further immigration -- and now what?

Not only the benefit of in-state tuition for illegal immigrants.

New York State passed the DREAM Act allowing illegal immigrants to access financial aid grants.

$27 million

College tuition is going to explode. We're saving up as much as we can, but I doubt we'll be able to make it through four years with our first. I can't imagine what will happen in over the next few years.

I wonder if it's worth it to keep on saving at this point. We may as well take one hell of a vacation and call it a day!

I supported DACA because at some point we need to invest in kids who were raised here and let them contribute as employable, tax-paying would-be citizen.

I've spent many years in and around Latin America and have met so many people who have worked illegally in the U.S. and then gone back to their home countries (voluntarily or by deportation).

Most really don't want to live forever in the U.S. They get "stuck" there because of their illegal status and often live relatively lonely lives while losing contact with home. I think if they had, say, a five-year work visa tied to an industry (not to a specific employer) that allowed them to travel and return, they would be much more likely to maintain ties in their home countries and more likely to leave at the end of the visa.

Regarding DACA- who better to go back and make changes for the betterment of their countries than someone who has an American education and understanding of how our system works?

Regarding not wanting to live in the US - a Marshall Plan type of investment would be the best way to address this. We need to make their countries liveable so they dont come here. This would only work when coupled with strict border and Visa enforcement and no benefits for being here illegally

+1 NP Lifelong Dem here who is in same boat as OP. I would also consider eliminating birthright citizenship. There should be citizenship verification for every service that receives federal dollars including school. We should not deny services but we should check.

I dont think they can check for the children for school since the SCOTUS ruled that they are entitled to school but the schools should absolutely check the parent registering the child for school as well as any students receiving free lunch/breakfast

The last line is so typical of the bs on this issue

"“I want people to be clear the Democratic Assembly stands with immigrants," Heastie said."

no we all stand with legal immigrants

no one should be standing with illegal immigrants

Yup! And the Ds are so out of touch that they don't realize this. What they are bacsically saying is "vote for me because I will give benefits to people who break into our country illegally."

Sorry, not a winning campaign message.

It actually is a winning campaign message in some parts of the country!

In Montgomery County, the AOC rally was well-attended and local politicians tout how MoCo is a Sanctuary County. Montgomery county is solid blue and voters will support candidates who support illegal immigration.

Look at CA. They passed a law to offer taxpayer-funded healthcare to illegal immigrants.

I lived in Mo Co for over 50 years (born and raised there). So I've seen changes. The wealthy areas remain "untouched" for now. Bethesda is thriving with its elite businesses and
Rockville is a hub for after-work activities and daily shopping. Chevy Chase and Potomac are wealthy suburban pockets that attract the Maryland "elite."

doubtful people in these areas are rallying around AOC and local politicians who support protections for illegal immigrants

Takoma Park and parts of Silver Spring, however, are welcoming and people will attend rallies, support legislation, and place signs in their yards expressing "love over hate."

I sound so stereotypical, but those are the two worlds in Mo Co. Sure, you have a moderate middle, but they're shrinking.

According to this article (https://bethesdamagazine.com/bethesda-beat/government/county-beefs-up-immigration-resources-in-response-to-federal-deportation-plan/), there are about 275,000 undocumented immigrants in Mo Co, which has a population of over 1m. Undocumented immigrants, therefore, make up about 1/4 of the population.

People move around the county; they move out of the county. But all in all, people move to find "their tribe." I imagine that this population will grow given Mo Co's sanctuary status.

MCPS is studying boundaries. not sure how that will work out - But at this point, many people in wealthy areas are upset over the thought of rezoning, fearing their property values will decrease.

so . . . If Mo Co is blue, maybe we need to examine a wealthy Democrat's beliefs.

just sayin'

But, maybe they are. They don't want to lose their source of cheap labor. They employ the illegal immigrants at their homes and businesses and want to keep the flow of cheap labor going! They don't have to deal with the collateral effects in their neighborhoods, because the illegal immigrants don't actually live in their neighborhoods. Their kids don't attend MCPS, and don't have to deal with the challenges that MCPS faces.

I completely agree that Montgomery County has changed. I haven't lived here as long, but even over the past 15 years, there have been drastic changes in my middle class neighborhood, and in my kids' schools.

I feel like 1/4 of the population may be correct, but in my area it is WAY higher.

I have had neighbors/friends/co-workers all leave to go to either Howard/Frederick or Loudoun Counties. Citing various reasons like our neighborhood got 'too crowded' or the schools weren't 'challenging' enough. But, you know what, these rabidly liberal friends continue to post on FB about how they support illegal immigration, and other Democratic policies. It's really difficult to me to understand how they reconcile their support for pro-illegal immigration policy with their distaste of what the results of those policies have been in MoCo.

Well said. The same thing is happening in parts of FxCo too.

Legal does not mean right and proper. Think anchor babies. Green Card-lotteries. "Temporary" protection scams. Trump could build his wall and the home team would still be screwed.
Anonymous
True. The temporary programs are a scam. Women climbing over the fencing at 8.5 months pregnant isnt proper either

Ugh, immigration threads on DCUM are so depressing. They always bring out the fascists who probably go to church on Sundays and fancy themselves good people ...

Where did you learn your history?

Fascists didn't go to church. They actually hated the Church...just like antifa.

There's still room in the sanctuary cities, and they need your help.

Find a realtor and get moving.
