Where are all you families of high performing students planning on moving to?

They rezone regularly. Did you know that?

They have tracking. With tracking, rezoning barely matters, except High School.

I lived through a rezoning at Howard. It was inconsequential.

It's odd that people fuss so much about something that's inconsequential.

Too funny....

Last fall the board decided against redrawing attendance boundaries for the 2019-20 academic year, and instead pursued adding or expanding specialty programs that would attract students to other schools......
As part of its directive, the school board approved for Martirano to explore having a consultant assist with the redistricting process as well as directing him to review the school attendance area policy.

I don't think MCPS is doing anything really different to HoCo, which is just a few years behind MCPS in terms of over crowding and how to address the issue.

I think it’s still too early in the process to talk about relocating but when the time comes we’re going to follow the crowd and head to Frederick Co if that’s where people are headed or HoCo or DC.

Sounds like all talk

+1 I know a few parents in W schools. They are not looking at going to private or moving. We live in the RM cluster. We're not moving either. Or do we not count because we are not in a W cluster?

But, if people do move or go to private, that would alleviate some of the crowding, so .. bye, I guess.

Hey, how about that!

Ha.. I was reading this thread in order and just commented on the HoCo redistricting, and now this. Seems to be a problem *everywhere*.

The redistricting study is the result of continued growth in the eastern part of the county and capacity issues at area schools. Deer Crossing Elementary is at 140 percent capacity and Centerville Elementary is at 139 percent capacity, according to a December report.

The overcrowding above is worse than any of the MCPS schools.

NO. Emphatically not. No one is talking about bussing. But right now we have school boundaries that have been added a bit ad-hoc, and the addition of Woodward poses an opportunity to look at where slight adjustments could address overcrowding, shorten bus rides for some kids, and generally address some of the less sensical boundries that have been drawn over time.

Think of it like gerrymandering reform. Somehow we ended up with boundaries that don't make a ton of sense, but you need to look at the whole jigsaw puzzle to figure out what a more reasonable boundary would be. In Chevy Chase, you will certainly not see your school assignment change. What MIGHT happen is that the boundaries are redrawn to include some kids not currently in-boundary, however.

Right? This is sort of best case scenario. Stay, pay property taxes, but reduce utilization of the schools. I'm not seeing the downside here.

No... people are panicking just because MCPS is going to hire a consultant to look at how boundaries *could* be drawn to address overcrowding and diversity. They are not going to bus anyone across the county. They are looking at neighboring clusters when drawing boundaries, not cross county.

I don't know if people are trolling or are just blowing things out of proportion because they are afraid. Don't mean to bring politics into this, but this is Trump's tactic -- fear mongering.

And I don't want them getting dumbed down by these poor kids.
Cmon just being real.
I also give a little money to my dear Alma Mater in Boston so I'm not that worried about them getting into college.
So I hear good things about Howard but they're too many Asians and schools are filling up like tuna cans there too.
The kids have to stay smart, at the top of there class. Those asians are too smart high performing. Frederick is nice too but I'll miss waking to drybar, Kapnos, Lululemon and all the other luxuries in bethesda row. Seriously any other suggestions??

Nice try but apparently you haven’t walked to Kapnos in a while since it’s gone. Work harder on your trolling next time.

That would be good. There are some people around here who live in $750+ homes who send their kids to private. Our public schools are benefiting from their property tax. Thanks! Much appreciated.

The problem is if people don't stay in decent numbers. That would cause a reduction in property and income tax collected, which would hurt on a county and state level. Many of the wealthier folks in the county live quite close to VA and/or DC, making a move relatively less disruptive to their lives than other situations where people threaten to pack up and go.

Even if people don't leave, we are already seeing more people of means choosing Va or DC, causing MoCo property values (and therefore tax collections) lag surrounding areas.

I'm having real trouble squaring "we're smart, and our kids are smart" with "panic!!!! we're moving to [somewhere where the grass is greener!"

I was wondering if people are going to move to MoCo to get in the new performing arts school at Woodward. Almost impossible to get into the best performing arts colleges/universities without going to a performing arts high school.

I'm old enough to remember when Frederick was referred to as "Fredneck". You pearl clutchers who are afraid of the poors ought to be careful what you wish for.
