OP here.

We don't live in DC, We are in the US, however. Maybe things are more conservative where you are? I don't see there being any issues with this being the US.

What country are you from OP?!?

This is a HUGE issue and exceptionally poor judgement by the female adults on the trip, but especially the teacher.

I am an American living in the Midwest of the country.

I know that Europeans are generally more casual about nudity, but I didn't realize that there are so Americans that have this big of an issue about same-gender nudity in a locker room. To be honest, I thought that most people were going to agree with me that it was no big deal. I kind of almost regret posting the question now.

Holy cow, midwest?!?!

Come on OP, quit playing coy.

You cannot be this stupid and unaware.

Are you sure you are not a troll.

I would not want her to see other grown women naked either, including her teacher. I would not be "angry" about it but I would be very disappointed in the teacher and the chaperones and would not trust them to go on another field trip.

OP, do you attend a private school? I don't see any public elementary school allowing this to happen in America.

They went to a pool at a public school! Apparently people group shower there in said public school every single day.

Op here.
The high school that the children were taken to for the swim party is my oldest daughters current high school.
I just asked my oldest daughter who is a freshman at the school if any of the girls shower after gym class. She said that some do and some don't, but that no-one is made to shower. She said that she does on the days that they actually sweat, which isn't very often.
She also said that pretty much all of the girls that are on the schools sports teams do shower after practices.

So yes, I guess that those showers are used by students every day.

As I mentioned earlier, we were not required to shower after gym class when I was in junior high and high school. But my two oldest sisters were. I would have protested forced showers at the time that I was in school if that had been the rule. But that is mostly because I was a rebel at that age, and not that the nudity would have been that embarrassing.

You are missing the point. The issue isn't the kids showering, it is the teacher, someone in a power position, joining in.
Ask your older daughter if her coaches/ teachers strip down and job them. Because that is the issue.

I'm a little surprised by this- not because I think nudity is bad or even inappropriate, but because we live in a society where parents get upset about this sort of thing- case in point.

I think OP, that you all made a mistake. Hopefully, it will be the end of it and the teacher won't get into trouble- it sounds like poor judgement that she should be allowed to move on from. Lesson learned.

I acted like no big deal because .... it was NO BIG DEAL.

You took a coed group of unrelated nine year olds to change together in a family bathroom? And they were comfortable with that? Most kids I know, mine included, would not have been ok with that at that age. My kids also would have been ok changing on their own if there were not a chaperone of their gender there.

No. The girls, the teacher, the other mom and myself were in the girls locker room. The boys were in the boys locker room. I would completely understand the outrage if the girls and boys were undressed in the same room. I would never have allowed anything like that whether anyone else was fine with it or not!

I wasn't responding to you OP. The PP I did respond to said she took a coed group.

OP.

What does me being in the Midwest have to do with your issue? I was asked if I'm an American and living in America, and yes I am, and I mentioned that I live in the Midwest. What's the problem with that?

I'm neither stupid or unaware!

Gee, let me check..... No I'm still not a troll. But If I was a troll, would I say that I was? It amazes me how when someone posts an opinion that is different than someone else's opinion, that seems to automatically mean that they are a troll.

OP, you seem to crave a lot of attention. You all made poor decisions. Now just move on. Silently.

Even though I don't fully agree with you on any mistakes having been made, I can respect your opinion. And I thank you for your thoughtful response!

For all the “but kids that age don’t care,” this was third graders. In DD knew girls as young as 5th and even 4th grades are getting their periods, which means some breast development. OTOH, DD was getting ready to start 9th grade when she got hers. They are all at different developmental stages. Including, yes— girls entering puberty. Hormones in milk? Overweight kids? Who knows. But it’s happening. They aren’t 4 year olds.

And for all the nudity is natural posters, that’s in your family. That’s not how every family feels.

In 2019, with all the concern about sex abuse and molestation, all the adults involved should have shown better sense. They should have realized that some kids and some families would be unfortable. And they should have realized that even if it was innocent, it looks bad and makes them vulnerable to allegations it wasn’t innocent.

Plus, the PP makes a great point about boundaries and grooming behavior.

Makes me wonder what other other kids of bad judgment this teacher is showing. In FCpS, the teacher would be fired. And no, OP, the DMV is definately not conservative.

Many people in the US are extremely skittish and immature about sex and also nudity, including showering after swimming. There is nothing wrong with what you all did per se, but it's good to know that others would freak out about it.

I am a teacher, and in our district you are advised never even to touch a child affectionately due to completely understandable concerns about pedophiles. Showering naked with children would, and should, 100% get you fired. It would probably even make the newspaper. And the parents would never be allowed on a field trip again.

Gee.. the county recreational pool where I usually go to swimming is pretty open. And so the ladies from younger than 7 months to older 77 years are fairly open about being nude, in the shared shower room and also in the spa. Oh yeah they do have a towel to sit on, but that's about it - to sit on.

You are missing the whole point, on randoms, versus adults in a position of authority (e.g., TEACHERS).
