My landscaper hates me

Anonymous
He probably is misogynistic. That's not unusual for people from Latin American areas. No, I'm not a troll. It is what it is. He shouldn't be rude to you. My guys are Mexican and great. Always polite.

And not to add on, but yes, $20 for 1/4 acre is low, even if that's what's billed. I would have added $10-$20 more if you pay by cash or check. We pay $25 for our lawn on 6,000 sq ft home lot and pay on a weekly basis, whether they're needed or not.

There’s a lot of amazingly judgemental people who are totally ignorant of Latin culture and ethnicities.

Why am I not surprised

Calling OP racist because she mentioned her landscaper was from Brazil? There are lots and lots of white Brazilians (the biggest ethnic origins in Brazil are Portuguese and Italian and there’s even Germans as well). In other words you have no idea what this man looks like but most likely jumped to conclude he’s a dark skinned Brazilian because you were solely looking for racism and needed it to fit your beliefs.

And claiming that OP is trying to pretend she’s a POC because she says she has Argentinian heritage. Hello! Argentina? It’s one of the whitest countries in the world. Pretty damn white like Italy or Spain. In other words, OP was not pretending to be POC but pointing out she is indeed familiar with Latin culture. But you wanted to twist what she said to fit what you wanted to believe.

OP, ignore these people. Fire your landscaper and get another one. I’m polite, courteous and respectful to the people I hire and I expect them to be the same to me, too.

OP here. Thanks for your post. I was also surprised at the outrage that I would mention the country of origin. You sound very familiar with Latin American cultural makeup. I appreciate your so eloquently educating people following this thread. Have a great day!

My DH is hands off with all contractors in our household, so I am the one giving him direction, etc. If I approach him about anything that is off (you missed the weeds in the bed over there) or (please clean the gutters before the next big rain storm), his responses are always curt. No sense of customer service at all...certainly not a gentleman. One time I asked about a price he charged me for a project, and he was visibly annoyed--did not handle it well and was rude about it. His overall prices are great--we have 1/2 acre and he only charges $20 to mow, trim, and blow. So I hate to try to find someone else.

I don't think it has to do with his culture because my last landscaper was also from Brazil, and he was so polite and accommodating. Maybe it's just his personality, but my DH suspects he is a misogynist.

Maybe it is because you keep talking to him in Spanish.

As a Latin person, I think it’s hilarious that you’re using a stereotype to defend yourself. Sure the Brazilian guy might be a misogynist, but you’re proof that the typical Argentinian stereotype - that you’re all arrogant, cheap a$$holes- is alive and well.

You may be barely Argentine, but you’re definitely a cheap a$$hole!

OP is saying the Brazilian landscaper is consistently rude to her and resists talking to her or taking instructions from her. That he is getting paid X amount is besides the point. He can quit and move on. His choice to keep working for her.

And if we are to attribute value to your post it's that it's perfectly justifiable to make assumptions based on nationality and ethnicity whether it's cheap Argentines or machismo Brazilians

OP, as someone who hires help, if you aren’t getting respect from them, fire them. He may be cheap and even may do a good job, but if he isn’t treating you with respect it’ll just eat away at you. Not worth it. Better to find someone else even at a higher rate.

As someone familiar with American Culture, it is normal for white people to need their employees to paw at them with gratitude for hiring them, regardless of the poor salary. I like to call it the “Master Syndrome”. it’s NOT wrong to point out that there is a history of racism and xenophobic behavior among many white women and men particularly when it comes to Latino men, especially hardworking Latino men. There’s been a lot of sociological studies on this.

Start a new thread on this! It sounds really interesting.

OP can also stop hiring and paying someone who disrespects her in her own home... see how that works?
