Why are American women so frumpy?

Women don't dress for men, women dress for other women, even the indignant frumpy ones. The indignant frumpy ones think they are "choosing not to care" when they are often hanging around with other women who "choose not to care" so basically they are sheeple just swinging in the other direction.

I personally make an effort most days because I like makeup, dresses, heels and all of that, but yeah, there are times I DGAF and wear soft clothes with elastic waistbands.

Women you view as frumpy are simply enlightened. Women who continue to fuss unnecessarily about these arbitrary and in some cases harmful “standards “ for womens’ appearance need to wake up. If you continue to waste time and energy on these things, that’s bad enough, but telling other women what they “need” to do is way out of line. You contribute to the objectification and oppression of women when you perpetuate these “standards “.

Focus on your health, physical and mental. The rest is nonsense cooked up to sell you products you do not need. Don’t be such a sucker.

eh. there's this mentality that how you look and present yourself to the world doesn't matter and all that matters is what's on the inside, and as long as you're healthy. that's bullshit. it does matter. how you dress says something about the way you feel about yourself and how you view yourself and the way you want people to view you. why else do people dress crunchy or punky or professionally? there's a lot of depression and unhealthiness in this country and it shows. think of healthy, fit people -- most look pretty good.

Are women with messy and ugly homes enlightened?

Are women with dirty cars enlightened?

Are women with babies with spitup and slovenly clothes enlightened?

Are families with messy yards full of weeds enlightened?

It only matters if people CHOOSE to make it matter. Most ideas about looking “good” or “professional” are made up. They change constantly. What is considered looking good now is totally different from what was good in other time periods. It also depends on the context. It’s almost all arbitrary. Most is motivated by people who want you to buy something. You give it the power by refusing to challenge it. I challenge it.

I think being dressed in a neat and tidy way is one thing, and manis/pedis, hair curling, makeup, heels, and push up bras is another. These are only requirements for women, thus they are sexist.

But you can dress neatly in ugly clothes, or can dress neatly in fashionable, flattering clothes. Is it sexist to do the latter, or is it anti-feminist to enjoy fashion? I don't think it is, I don't think there's only one way to be a feminist.

I think it comes down to dressing as a choice rather than a necessity. Choice is freedom. I don’t want to be forced to dress or look a certain way, I want to do it voluntarily.

Simple. Most American women are lazy.

The individual choice to do this is not anti-feminist, but the expectation is.

+1 Lazy, fat, depressed. Not caring about one's appearance is a sure sign of depression. Mentality healthy people take care of themselves and take pride in how they look.
Anonymous
And why do you think American women are depressed?

I have many reasons...no paid maternity leave, no paid paternity leave, spiraling health costs, high day care costs.

Not everyone is depressed even with all the problems you mentioned... And the ones that are frumpy and not give a damn about their appearance sure as hell are not looking frumpy to make a political statement against social expectations for women.

Personally I think women are idiots. They spend so much time on inconsequential things while men run society. They can continue running on the hamster wheel. Let them distract themselves with waxing, coloring hair an injecting themselves with Botox. Those of us who are liberated will continue to be free.

I think there are:
Frumpy women who are enlightened
Frumpy women who have given up
Frumpy women who don’t know how to dress for their age, body type, and wallet
Women who embrace frump for religious reasons or take shelter in it because they were sexually assaulted or harassed.

I find frump less offensive than bad skimpy clothes on bad bodies. There’s a family at our pool where grandmother, mother, and adult daughter are all skinny and then have saggy, crepey, leathery tanned skin covered in tattoos and surgical scars. They wear super tiny bikinis. I’m a woman and find it distasteful to see. Not because it’s sexual in some way. Because it’s unhealthy looking skin.
