PP -- Don't get too high on a horse about your beloved public schools. Sure, they have special needs kids and kids that aren't so bright. But those kids are separated from the really bright kids. The bright kids get all of the best classes and generally the kids in those classes don't look very diverse to me. |
8:10 - As the pp, I was referring to the different people :35 was meeting - not to the general population as you assumed. It was an invitation for her to explore. |
PP here -- and DC is in public school. And she is meeting a number of "different" kids -- kids she didn't meet in her previous private school. Kids from Ghana, kids with Asperger's, etc. There were "diverse" kids in her previous school (which we loved), but they were few and far between. There are reasons to go to private school -- but don't kid yourself that diversity is one of them. |
We should have a contest as to which school has the most beautiful moms! I nominate Holton. Wonder Woman's girl just graduated in June. WW is probably mid-50s or so and is still quite beautiful. She'd look great wearing one of those tennis skirts or a burlap bag. There are also a number of stunning Asian moms at Holton. One is a billionare who dresses classier than most models. |
Are you serious? |

Different poster here but I don't think I am kidding myself. Our private school has about 40% racial/ethnic diversity. Our public school is about 5%. I would guess that our private school actually has more economic diversity than our public school as well - particularly at the elementary level where the neighborhood is limited to pretty expensive houses. |
No, I thought it would be funny to suggest based upon some of the _itchy comments people put on these posts! I don't think people should "judge a book by the cover" -- a lot of these tennis-skirted moms are really nice people...who cares what they wear? |
"This thread could be summed up as "mean girls grow up into moms."
This website could be summed up by this quote!! |
So ok, I'll finally chime in.
I went to public school K-12. The PP who said that the smart kids are in their own bubble is dead on the money. My schools, especially in high school, probably looked like they had diversity on a numbers basis. I NEVER saw those kids. There was no getting to know others of different racial and ethnic backgrounds. In the entire gifted program of probably 50 kids at my grade level, we had two African-Americans and one Chinese-American. My elementary school, in a good but not great area (random middle to upper middle class 'burbs), was 100% white. Our local elementary school in DC is supposed to be one of the good ones. But, looking around my neighborhood, I don't see much diversity, and certainly zero economic diversity. Houses start at $700K, give or take, and go up to over $2 million from there. The few apartments available for rent start at around $2-3K a month for a one bedroom. There may be many reasons to choose public schools for your child. In my neighborhood, diversity is not one of them. Because that was not available and I thought the curriculum (especially in arts and music) was not as good as what was otherwise available, we chose an independent school for our child. |
TC Williams, all the public schools in Arlington, and most of the Fairfax County public elementary and high schools I've ever seen are VERY diverse. |
Wonder Woman as in Lynda Carter? |
Ok. Good. |
To an earlier post -- yes wonder woman as in Linda Carter. She's still beautiful |
Yes, I saw a pic of her recently (I can't remember where) and she is still stunning. I had forgotten that she lives in the area. |
